They do not perform better, all the ports now have a transition to the sleeve and that is never perfect on all the ports all the way around. Also, the heat transfer is much better with the plating to aluminum than the thick iron sleeve.
@EricksonMachinePerformance15 күн бұрын
@terrypikaart4394 when machined correctly with a quality sleeve, the ports match up. And if not perfect, they can quickly be matched with a burr. As to heat transfer, it's a non-issue we have tested them on a dyno and in real life use. They cool the same and many times make more power. The iron liner stays round and holds its shape better for ring sealing. Plated cylinders are used by manufacturers because they are cheaper to produce. The one benefit is its lighter. But you are only talking about few oz different. Thanks for commenting. Also remember, Nascar, Promod, Topfuel all run iron sleeves. If Nikasil was better for heat transfer, then they would use it. There is a reason they don't is that iron liners have better ring seal and stay round which equals HP

Man I’ve been using an air powered dentist drill and a 2mm carbide end mill. It’s just like a drill but it actually works and it’s kinda fast, you can just plunge straight in and then wallow it out until it’s thin enough for you to chisel it out or stick an extractor in there. I’ve seen you do a lot of porting so I’m sure you’ve probably tried small endmills before but the dentist drill spin at like 30k rpm it really is a big difference. I also could never find a small carbide endmill that would go in an air dremel until I found the dentist drill

The Snap On TECH2FR100 (3/8 digital torque wrench) is garbage. Do a quick search they have issues with the battery connections and shut off. The warrant is only a year so you'll use it 2-3 times and when its up have to spend $150 to have it repaired.
@EricksonMachinePerformanceАй бұрын
@unedited98 thanks for commenting My tech2fr100 worked great for well over a decade without issue. When the screen died but they fixed it for like $100 that was 5 years ago ish. The battery issue normally happens if you grab the base on the wrench and pull from there instead of the handle ( when it has happened to me ) As long as you hold the handle correctly I personally haven't had an issue. That is now my backup. It has served me well. That being said it was built a LONG time ago so maybe some of the newer once have other issues

The modern YZ250 2-stroke (I have the 2019) has a problem that I am sure causes a lot of damaged pistons, ans is related to a cold seizure. The jetting is so darn rich stock, the water takes forever to warm up. I am not sure mine even got to a good operating temp. I bought my bike with just 3-4 hours on it, and i am sure the previous owner was just impatient and took off before the water was warm enough. I bet many kids do that with the YZ. I rebuilt the top end, (and modified the engine for more low rpm power), to find the stock piston had a slight 4-corner scuff, but the major damage was at the exhaust port. The hot piston expanded before the cold cylinder could, and forced the piston into the exhaust port. The top ring groove was wide with a budge on the crown edge (and looks ready to come apart, but it still ran good), and the lower ring groove was squeezed shut against the ring. I will bet that up to 80% of those bikes, (because i now how impatient kids are), with stock jetting, has a damaged piston in the jug. I have changed every jet in that carb (after raising compression which did lean it out a bit), and it is still running rich in the middle (have to change the entire needle---again.) It was amazing I was not fouling plugs with the stock jetting,--but it was close. I know 2-strokes with a carb are jetting a bit rich from the factory (because of different air quality around the world), but that thing would ruin the backs of my jerseys,---it was spitting so much oil out of the stinger.

I bought a blown up 2015 YZ. Massive detonation damage. The timing (aligned marks) was WAY off. Set it with a dial indicator to factory specs and have been all set since. Its easy to jump to the carburetor or the seals. But rod bearings, crank bearings, timing, and the head (did someone cut yours along the way?) all need to be checked.
@EricksonMachinePerformanceАй бұрын
@pgbpro20 You're right. Many people blame the wrong thing for their failure. That's why we made this video to help. These pistons were collected from different engines we have rebuilt for customers over the years. When we rebuild an engine, we go thru everything, and if it's a topend we do for a customer, we point them in the direction where to look and what caused the last failure to try to avoid it happening again. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Great video. For youngins who are new to the trade I would highly suggest adding your clearance to the piston measurement and zero the gauge with the 0 on the 12:00 position. Seems easier mentally to hit a dead zero than to his say 2.5 over. Visually you can more easially identify how close or far you are from your final dimension.
@EricksonMachinePerformance2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. This is how a lot of shops do it. It's how I was taught 25 years ago. Both methods work. I prefer knowing where zero is and honing my clearance. That being said It's personal preference both ways are correct. And at this point, I wouldn't change for fear of making a mistake. It's ingrained in me.
@calebmichie28542 ай бұрын
@EricksonMachinePerformance if you don't mind a question. I'm sitting here staring at a mitutoyo (I'm a fanboy) dial bore gauge with a resolution of one tenth. And a starret with a resolution of half thou. I'm using bosses sunnen and it's half thou. However, if given the opportunity to be just that bit more accurate.... I'm torn on what to buy lol.
@EricksonMachinePerformance2 ай бұрын
@calebmichie2854 honest answer is you kind of need both. I use a starret , sunnen and mitutoyo. I like them all. If you want email you your # and I'll be happy to give you my opinion and each. [email protected]

I noticed that the Keihin carbs I have, have 3 jets but I have another set of carbs I purchased used, for parts that have only two jets. Can you tell me how or if the 3 jet is better or worse than the 2 jet carbs? I assume the 3 jet will have more of a midrange performance over the two jet? Thank you for your videos, I have learned so much from them.

To be honest with you, I have never tried them back to back. I have rebuilt tons of both 2 and 3 jet Keihin's over the years. I'm sure there could be a benefit to one of them in certain combinations. On all performance engines, we switch to a Mikuni sbn carbs. In my Opinion the Mikuni is a MUCH better carb.
