Perahia is a wonderful teacher and providing excellent advice to a student who has played quite well. Bravo to both!

Deutlicher aufzeigen, was zu was inhaltlich gehört. Nicht immer gleiche Pausen zwischen Elementen, das macht keinen Sinn des Zusammenhangs.

Next time I am there, I will seek out these performances. I’ve already been to the Mann Auditorium and the New Israel Opera several times. I even took my little grandson to a Hebrew “Magic Flute” of Mozart, for children. The whole audience loved it, and there were a few international caliber voices in the cast.

The orchestra did a fine job, performing everything the conductor asked of them. A few minor intonation problems. But he could have asked for more, he just provided a workmanlike performance that could have been much more expressive. So all praise to the youngsters, less to him.

There are a lot of complexities in this work -- thus it's way beyond most youth orchestras. I am not hearing any "workmanlike" qualities in this performance. By its nature, Elgar requires a great deal of precision in order to carry out his ideas. Their rendition is clean, flowing, highly expressive, and fresh. It is obvious that the orchestra is exceptional. I give due credit to the conductor for not undermining their efforts, as can sometimes happen. I have no affiliation with this group, and have no insights into their rehearsal regimen, but I don't hear anything that would indicate a lack of inspiration and passion from the podium.

In all my 40+ years of playing classical piano-as a player, as a teacher, observing other masterclasses-I’ve never seen a student take a direction from the instructor to the point where the teacher says “that’s too much, do ‘less’.”

If there ever was a personage who was the polar opposite of bullshit, it is her. Everything, everything again, she hears and scrutinizes with logic, love, and an antipathy for phoniness. She is genuine, but to say merely "knowledgeable", would be an insult to her musical status. She knows what she wants and, if it is not to her liking, she amends the wayward mind, melding such into concise conformity with an artistic altitude. - David Lyga

Perahia is much less poetic than this student naturally is, hence it's a big loss of time for this student.

The thing with this master classes, in general, is that they focus too much on the performance as the master would do it. Which, I’m sure many would find great value in that, but to me it’s not that interesting. I think the classes should focus more on correcting the student on technique, where they struggle, clear difficulties and such. As it’s obvious this student has quite a few technical flaws that need to be addressed. It’s easier to find your own voice in music when you have mastered those difficulties. The thing with teaching interpretation at such meticulous level is that it is too difficult and frankly unnecessary, because in the end, no one can play the same, nor should play the same. Argerich, Horowitz, Richter, Gould, Rubinstein, etc. They all play Appasionata sonata and each version is very different, different accents, different rubato, different dynamics. Etc. But what do all of them have in common? Superb technique, they can nail the piece beginning to end with little error and with their own mark of musicality. In, in the end a pianist who is well develop technically will find room to find their own emotion in music. Otherwise, playing with tension, bad posture, unnecessary movements will just hinder the ability to connect with the sounds and thus create a moving performance. Just my 2 cents.
