The new series The On1y One has put me in a difficult position. The series itself with no doubt is a masterpiece since the director of Your Name Engraved Herein is on it my expectations were reached! However, with these tropes I’m always left with the thought of ‘how will it work out for them in the long run?’ since the characters are already put in such a difficult position of being in the same family whether they knew each other prior or after their parents got together… I think what I like most about The On1y One is that it approaches that sensitive part to the trope with a touch of reality and you get that sense throughout the whole series. They approach it so realistically that the bitter-sweetness through these tropes should be expectant and that’s what makes the series so watchable. My only problem is with some projects… like history4 which clearly glorifies/romanticizes abuse.

Yesss. We need more mature bls. I just watched a japanese bl called what did you eat yesterday? about a couple in their 40's and it's sooo good!! If you haven't watched it I highly recommend it.

i was thinking about this and thailand, do you think more and different types of stories would be told if producers adopted the short series type of format? 8-10 episodes 35+ minutes each. 12 eps 50 minutes each seems a lot to finance and there are always boring side characters, misunderstandings, and filler episodes. a tight 8 ep 40 minute drama could be a way of funding a wider range of stories.

i feel the same about Earth in Fourever You, come on the guy is 27 still playing college freshman! i blame it on the way BL (mainly in Thailand) is financed which is with sponsorships and concerts. that is a young person's game. And also who is the core target audience 15-30 yearolds. i think we have to a look at different countries to tell stories about different stages in a person's life and settle for fewer dramas. i hope Thailand comes up with a BL+ category as a lot of their BL actors are ageing and i think it is too late for them to move into lakorns. i hope someone sees their potential, their fanbase and the need for more mature stories and does something.

And another I also don't like when they have on character that is in their late 20's almost 30 and they are interested in a college student. Like please get a grip and be for real. That is not necessary.

Yes, totally agreed, we need more bl shows with mature actors. The school bl has don't it for me, I can't watch another one. At this point I only watch mature bl recently, which leaves me with not much to watch but I rather a short list of good mature bl's than a long list of poor school acting.

I tried watching and was so confused, I got to episode 2 and I have not gone back since. It just started weird. I hear some say you have to read the books to understand, which I think I should not have to if they are doing are a live action of a manga.

dude i've always noticed this and steered clear because if it was real life it would be so weird?? imagine growing up with someone, wether from birth or young age, you live with them or are like cousins who see each other often. and then they say they love you romantically... shudders. adopted/ blood related or not if you see them as family that line cannot be crossed. and this is where the "forbidden love" fascination comes in. bl itself often has themes of forbidden love and this is like a spinoff of that so i can see why it overlaps often. i've seen many incest adjacent premises like this become popular. i also think people are too quick to turn a blind eye as long as they are not literally related. this is also a conversation that could continue in so many different directions, straight romances, siblings, other countries, GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY LMAO

So, before I continue to watch this amazing video, I just want to say I have been longing for someone, anyone to talk about this. I'm very uncomfortable with this trope and I always stay clear from watching any drama that even insinuate the will have this. I don't like it, and I could not finish The Unknown after 2 episodes.

One of the issues is that Change has a stable of actors and they clearly seem to intend to use their pairs of actors in different roles. IDEALLY if this was being adapted by a random production company hopefully they would have searched for and hired a darker skinned actor. But Thai BL industry predominently hires very lightskinned mixed race Thai actors. I won't comment on features. As to the political message I am willing to wait to see how much they focus on that. It was a 1st look trailer so hopefully nearer the airtime the trailer will be more accurate to what is in the series.

It's my favorite. I loved your review of the show. I think it's one of those shows with so much more psychological depth than you'd suppose at first watch. When you finally realize the level of love and respect between the characters, the toxicity morphs into mere communication difficulties. Yes, they are dom/sub, but that's what each prefers. Even in Mizuki's dominance, he is never mean spirited, just insecure... the lingering touch and shy smile when being handed the soy sauce shows how he cherishes Yoh's small favors. Of course it is totally lost on Yoh who never pays attention. lol I am also impressed that Mizuki never raises his voice or gets violent. He puts up with Yoh's drunken rants and honestly finds him endearing. And it's not like Mizuki is incapable of cooking a delicious meal. He would rather eat a terrible meal without complaint if it shows he is loved. That CRUNCHY first curry cracks me up yet his heart longs for a repeat. Besides, Yoh doesn't even like his own cooking! lol Yoh is an unreliable narrator. He does so little self-reflection and has no idea what others could be thinking. He's lost in his own fog, but Mizuki appreciates his simplicity and kind spirit. Yoh thinks that if Mizuki was a woman it would be love at first sight. DUH... The first eye lock seals the deal and Yoh's mouth even drops open. Yoh literally thinks Mizuki's the most gorgeous thing on this planet (or beyond) and can't stop obsessing. He just can't recognize his own feelings. He even interprets the adrenaline from excitement as fear. Yoh is never scheming, so Mizuki can let down his guard and relax around him. He know he can outwit Yoh if the need arises. The air he wants to breathe is the aura around Yoh, not air from the window, but as always, things fly right over Yoh's head. lol Tying Yoh up freaked me out, but it was a perfect cliffhanger for the last episode. Malicious intent or violence would have made me mad, but they talked about actual feelings and turned it into dom/sub play that they both admitted enjoyed. It could have gone either way and I'm glad it ended up the way it did. They both show growth despite their stifling limitations. Yoh has learned he can say no and set boundaries. Mizuki has learned to stop being so unreasonable with his "deals". They are slowly learning to speak up and reach out to each other. There is now conversation at the dinner table... awkward conversation, but they are trying. Their bond is becoming more apparent. Even to us. Two dysfunctional people trying to make a relationship work daily. Sounds like all of us. lol

Yes, I watched it and I love it, actually it is one of my favorite Bl's, but I would admit I don't really know why nah. It's basically a show with a toxic gay couple who barely communicates with each other and a few other stuffs in between.
