What a GREAT video. I’m working in the railroad industry for 50 years and got to ride on my first narrow gauge in Portland, Maine. Examining the rail, it looked like the rails were standard weight

This has to be the most amazingly CLEAN industrial railroad (& narrow gauge, to boot!) I've ever seen in my life! The locomotives look immaculate & very modern. (What manufacturer built them?). Even the gondoal cars are clean! Iron ically, the ONLY piecr of equipment that showed ANY signs of weathering was the water car! 😄 I'm guessing the fact that this is a desert environment in additon to rxcellent maintenace; and the fact that appatently in a very sparsely populated are means graffitti is non-existent! 🙂 Where in the southwest is this operation located? Very interesting video! 😉

This locomotive was built by MLW for the White Pass and Yukon Railway in Alaska. However it never operated there because they shut down their freight operations in the early 1980s. It was subsequently acquired by USG for their Plaster City operation, replacing GE 70-ton C-C locomotives. It was originally built with the safety cab; there is another unit from the order of three with safety cabs still working on the WP&Y

Larry Rose and I are both past presidents of the San Diego Garden Railway Society. Larry’s was one of the first built in 1988-89 I think. Larry’s late wife,Tanya, was a master gardener. We had a lot of fun in those days and didn’t take ourselves seriously.

I feel more comfortable with 5ft gauge for industrial operations at a large gypsum quarry and the large gypsum plants. Although timber logging and peat extraction operational sites widely utilizing less than even 3ft narrow gauge NG 750mm~29.528in. The majority of 750mm NG rail roads already have long suspended their operations due to lacking demand for peat. The children's NG rail roads are quit popular among all post soviet states. Such recreational rail roads also serve as a place for internship for students of vocational schools. Much better to grasp knowledge and hone skills, when you work in a real place.

This is the San Diego Model Railroad Association HO SD&AE layout. This does include a model of the Plaster City Narrow Gauge in HOn3 in roughly 1950. While this is more of a freelance prototype take on the railroad, it is modeling Plaster City.

Great layout and equipment! In case anyone is interested Mike May has partnered up with PBL to produce HOn3 kits for the WP&Y and the USG versions of the Bombardier MLW DL535e(W). I just pre-ordered two of them two weeks ago. The company is called Northbound Model Works. If you’re still into bashing away at it consider this…after twenty years of turning Atlas RS-4/5’s into Alco DL535’s, I’m opting for the kit! The equipment in this video represents the leading edge of the hobby by any measure. Outstanding!

I do have to ask though - how did your truck hold up in the sand? I rented a jeep wrangler specifically for this railroad and it did well for me. I initially had a small truck before upgrading to the wrangler thinking a truck wouldn’t get it done. The jeep did well for the most part - but it did get pretty bad for a quarter mile stretch or so about half a mile past the superstition trestle heading towards the quarry.
