The first public performance took place at the prestigious "Ku Club", on the island of Ibiza in 1987 and was greeted with instant, rapturous acclaim. After being awarded the right to hold the Summer Olympics in 1992, it was hoped that they might perform it together at the "Opening Ceremony", but the fates decreed differently and Freddie tragically died 7 months prior to the event. Montserrat Caballe only sang the powerful duet once after Freddies demise, and that was to a recording of his voice in the male role, but it was extremely difficutl for her emotionally. The rest if the time, she preferred to keep it as a sacred, treasured tribute to her cherished friend and collaborator. She sadly died in 2018 and the world suddenly became both a little colder and greyer. Yet thanks to modern technology we can still enjoy and thrill to this triumphant, monumental anthem..
