If he has acted like he was a fan, he would likely have kept his job. Instead he asked not to go by Michael's name, and that made them think he's not a fan (although it also makes him look like a liar for saying he loves his songs earlier)

The scenes with the Bobs is funny, but you can just see David Herman's skin crawl when his character lies about liking Michael Bolton's music. It makes the scene all the more brilliant.
