a few small things I noticed about this number that reveals how much foreshadowing is snuck into the smallest places: 1. when the “why do you…” motif turns emotionally after it’s revealed how much work hamilton did on the federalist papers, it’s only burr, angelica, and eliza asking how he writes “like tomorrow won’t arrive,” or “like [he needs] it to survive” at first, the company only joining to fill in the emptied pit orchestration. of the main characters featured in “non-stop” (burr, hamilton, angelica, eliza, washington, and those represented by singers in the company), only burr, eliza, and angelica have a role in hamilton’s death sequence. burr shoots him, and in “the world was wide enough,” he states that both angelica and eliza were by his side when he died. those three being omnipresent in the motif’s presentation creates a haunting take on the line in retrospect: they know that he is running out of time, and they’ll be there when he does. 2. the lyrical foreshadowing to hamilton’s death is snuck into the finale of act I as well. the other two major hints at this (in “the room where it happens” and “hurricane”) both come in act II, but the very end of act I already builds towards the inevitable. two motifs feature the idea of waiting, in opposite ways. burr’s “wait for it” is used to foreshadow hamilton’s death in “hurricane,” where burr himself sings the motif after hamilton sings “I couldn’t seem to die.” in this, however, it’s more hidden and takes on a double-entendre. hamilton, in almost a rage, declares “I am not throwing away my shot” repeatedly before declaring “I am alexander hamilton, hamilton/just you wait!” however, after every time he declares he’s not throwing away his shot, the men echo “just you wait.” not only does hamilton throw away his shot in the duel with burr, he also metaphorically does by destroying his relationship and reputation via the reynolds pamphlet
