Thank you for your comment 😊 but I recorded this on TikTok and didn’t realize it had a filter on it. If you’re talking about the redness in my cheeks, that’s the filter lol. At the end of this video the filter comes off and you can see my regular face.

Your first point was so validating, I nearly started crying in public. I've lived in a non-black country before (in Europe) for a few years. I know too well that racism exists and it's made worse when you have an African accent like yours truly....BUT...I wasn't prepared for Canada. I was heartbroken because like you, people sang high praise of Canadians. In addition to being avoided on sidewalks, people will literally request the next bus stop to avoid sitting beside you on the bus. The older ones will stand up from their verandas in the summer to go into their homes while making sure you are aware that you're the reason they can't enjoy their sit-out anymore. It's crazy, you mean my passing by affects you that much?? Let's not talk of other public spaces like libraries or malls. Or being trailed by shop workers or hearing the over-head announcements asking security to go check the aisle you're at. I had to see these things happen at least a dozen times because I refused to believe it. It's like they'd like you to know that they view you as sub-human without saying a word. I don't care for pop music or pop artistes, but the day I knew how affected I was, was when I broke down in tears at a Shopper's Drug Mart when "Brown Skin Girl" started playing. Mind you this song had been out for a few years at this point but it was like new to me at that moment. A reminder that I was a precious human being worthy of love & respect. Black person prepare yourself (and your kids, if you have any) if you are moving to Canada cos chile....😮💨 I've had more intense experiences but too long to share them all in a comment section.

@@chichi_114 Wow reading this made me so emotional, thank you for sharing this with me. I’m so sorry you had this experience, it sounds sooooo emotionally exhausting and draining. It’s definitely challenging to ignore that behavior, I try to remind myself that their hate and envy is lack of knowledge and pure ignorance. It’s not going to fully remove the hurt but it might help you remember their ugly nature has nothing to do with you! Sending love 💖💕

@therealcryten Thank you. Exhausting and draining is accurate! I'm better some days ignoring it than others. I've often wondered how other black people might be dealing with this because it's a topic I find fellow immigrants try to avoid. I don't know if they feel their bosses or someone would get wind of it & they'd be in trouble 🤷🏾♀️. Then again, most are just okay with being in a place that offers a more stable standard of living in terms of security, education, etc than their own countries. For me, talking about it is more about finding practical ways to cope and not about stewing in bitterness because what really can you do with a badly behaved ignorant adult?

Ahhh I feel you, discussing things is so important but I know how stressful it can be when people don’t share the same view as you or have an open mind so they can’t even grasp what you’re saying. It’s definitely challenging to navigate, especially when everyone seems to ignore the elephant in the room and you don’t have much support on these feelings.
