The Japanese tried their best to fight "normally" at Philippine Sea and in Formosa in 1944 but they lost all their hundreds of planes and hundreds of airmen at each battle with I think only 2 hits on U.S. ships. They switched to kamikazes which were really guided missiles starting with Leyte Gulf and they proceeded to score so many sunken ships and damaged ships on the U.S. fleet. They were already "suicide planes" at Philippine Sea and Formosa with conventional planes that couldn't do anything because of superiority of U.S. technology and a huge influx of new warships in 1944. Why not turn their planes into accurate guided missiles instead? They made sure the U.S. would pay dearly with lives and ships in the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa and that was all thanks to the kamikazes doing a far better job of air support than at Philippine Sea and Formosa.

I learned about this song through watching Dimash's version from the Jazz Festival performance. Such a beautiful song. It's interesting to see the areas where Dimash's version and this original version are similar and where they are different. Dimash's version brought tears to my eyes while listening to it and this one does as well. I never would have heard the original if not for Dimash singing it, so am thankful he chose this song to cover. Beautiful.
