Interesting there is a model railroad display, inside this mall. The only other mall I ever once saw this inside of, was Sandburg Mall in Galesburg, IL(which is now closed).

I was born in Albemarle in 1988. I never remembered this mall in its day. It was already Stanly County Commons in my day. Apparently I had a night time graduation party thing the HS school did after we graduated in 2007. I definitely remember Albemarle Mall! I left NC in 2012 for Texas. It’s nice seeing a piece of nostalgia. Now to find out if you made a video of Albemarle Mall. My mom still lives there and she sent me this video. Thank you for this video. Edit: as I did not see a video of Albemarle Mall, please make one of it! I know you can’t really go inside and see the old abandoned places but do what you can. I don’t think it was demolished completely was it? Last I knew it was still standing. It’s just not in use.

Mall memories: I went there for the first time in 1984 to see The Muppets Take Manhattan in the inside theatres. Saw so many movies there through the years... was there for the opening midnight showing of Batman with Michael Keaton. The line was so long inside the mall! I worked at Chick-fil-A upstairs across from McDonalds and Sbarro. When our managers would leave, we'd make "deals" with each other like we'd make chicken sandwiches for pizza or burgers. Then we'd swap food. We would have probably gotten fired if the bosses knew. Back then the McDonalds had a little carousel in the window that little kids could ride on. 80's teenagers would fill the mall up on the weekends. Inside "crusin'" and flirting with each other. So many sweet memories of this place! How I wish the mall would make a comeback. I don't understand why it doesn't as one stop, climate controlled shopping just seems ideal. Thanks for the great walk through video!

I was in this mall almost every other day from the time I was born up until many years after. So a lot of my oldest memories were made here. I still try to go whenever I'm back in town. And yes, I agree, I liked the original bright 80s colors better, but other than the new paint and changes to the entrance, this mall largely looks the same as when it was built. And yes, this mall is still a community staple and has lots of support. And while there are definitely more vacancies than ever before, there have always been some for as long as I can remember.

Malls are going obsolete. This younger generation can't afford to shop there. They don't want to. They rather get high, and do adult activities. Than enjoy being a teenager. This is what our world coming too. Everyone is becoming more and more isolated.

I would love to walk through The Mall one more time. By the mid 90s most of that mall was Calhoun Community College's Huntsville campus. I still have memories of the Christmas decorations at THE MALL and Parkway city in the 80s. There was an ice cream stand at, I think Parkway city that sold chocolate dipped frozen bananas that my mother loved. And that liminal space with toys r us and books a million, I've walked through that entrance probably hundreds of times. My mall was Madison Square, my first job was in that mall. It's where my friends hung out in the late 90s. Happy to see some malls in my hometown survive and still do well, though.

To give some more insight on this, I know a couple of people that worked in that mall. From my understanding Belk owns the part of the building that they are in. As far as I know the Belk is still open. Either Belk will have to sell its part of the property or the mall will be torn down around it. Sears used to employ a similar real estate strategy. Back when there were still many Sears stores operating some would be sitting alone in a massive parking lot and that was becuse the mall that was attached to it had shuttered and been demolished. The Valley Hills Mall mentioned in another comment currently has a vacant Sears anchor store. I have been told that this store remains vacant because it was/is owned by Sears and so is the section of parking lot around it.

I went to this mall a few months before you did to document it as well as I had a feeling it was closing soon. They still had tables out, and littly kid rides in the area that was once the food court. I drive past it sometimes and have slowly been watching it get demolished. That first hallway you walked in is now gone, and main atrium is gone too although the facade of the JCP is still there. Sad to see it go, but Myrtle Beach still has one true 80s mall left, the Myrtle Beach Mall. Coastal Grand is cool too, its 80s style but built in the 2000s. Also look up the Myrtle Square Mall, that one is even more of a loss because it was right next to the beach! They could have turned it into something cool maybe made a direct walking path from the mall to the beach for those needing a break. You can still see the big grass path and parking lots where it used to be. To this day the land still sits unused, such a waste.

@alec_508 I've been to every myrtle beach mall that still stands today, including Inlet obviously which doesn't, however I only filmed Inlet. One day i will return to the area since Coastal Grand was amazing and Myrtle Beach, which IIRC stays open till 9, is dim and empty and is worth a video being made

So cool to see this video from my old town! The theater started as a Jerry Lewis cinema but was in a building in the parking lot that was torn down to build the CVS that is there now. They theater stayed in operation from 1972-2000. In the 80s I saw many movies at that theater and spent a lot of quarters at the arcade in that mall. Cinema Treasures has a great writeup of what they called the Carmike Movies 2 location at that location.

I have a ton of memories of this mall. From walking around as a teen to building the Torrid in it to getting recruited into the Army in this mall. I honestly surprised it is still as healthy as it is today. Once Madison Square Mall shutdown and got demolished, everyone thought it was inevitable that Parkway Place would meet the same demise. Nearly a decade later, it's still just as strong.

This was my go to mall living on the southside of Gwinnett as Gwinnett Place mall was further and much more crowded (at the time). My grandma used to take me back to school shopping here in the 90s at the JCPennys. The fountain you mention was the center piece of the mall. I just recently walked through the mall on 12/23/24 and even the heat had been shut off throughout the mall. Sad to see it go.

Low crime, stable upper middle class demographics, not too much competition from other malls, and fairly easy to get to. These are keys to whether a mall will thrive or die. Amazon is NOT the cause of malls dying. It’s these factors I just mentioned. On a side note, carpet in malls is always a bad idea. Other than that this is a beautiful mall, though I regret not seeing any fountains or much greenery. I still miss the classic 80s malls with the fountains and lush plants and trees.

Storer Cable, Prattville's Cable TV provider, used to have an office in that mall. I also remember a sporting goods store being there in the early 80s. My mom used to work at J&G's next door when I was a kid, in the early 90s, and I spent a ton of time there. It was T&G's to start out, ran by Tina & Gloria. Tina sold out sometime in the very early 2000s. I spent a lot of time in this little mall but dont think I ever actually went into any of the shops. It was always so empty I could go hang out there by myself while Mom worked. I thought it was a strange little area. A strip mall with an actual indoor mall in the middle of it. Also spent a lot of time at the old movie theater. The movie theater was never in the mall, though. It was in the bottom of the parking lot, where CVS sits now. You could go see a movie there for $2 in the early 90s. The Cinema 12 ran it out of business. The last movie I ever saw there was Baby Geniuses in 1999. It closed in the early 2000s and was used as a law office at some point, before the building was left abandoned and torn down to make room for CVS. There was also a small carnival that would set up in the parking lot between the movie theater and T&Gs that I went to sometimes. That gated area used to be for loading and unloading merchandise but now it's just storage. One year we built a parade float in that area for the Christmas parade and I got to ride in it. I made a lot of wonderful memories in that little strip mall. As another commenter said, I dont remember it ever being Piggly Wiggly. It was Food World when I was a kid, where Food Outlet is now. Piggly Wiggly was in another building a little ways down the road, closer to downtown. That building was just recently torn down a couple of months ago to make a parking lot for local businesses.

This is the mall that I wanted to see for a while, but after seeing how horrible it’s become on the inside, I don’t really know if I want to anymore. Especially if it means I’m gonna get sick just from recording a KZbin video. Glad to see there’s at least other videos of this mall online. I do feel like if they left the other half of the mall open, and closed off this half with the food court, I feel like the mall would’ve probably been doing remotely decent still, just because that other half seems bigger. Great video as always!

It used to be Brunos, then it was a Food World and moved to a different location, which is NOW Food Outlet. It was never a Piggly Wiggly, that I know of. Price's Donut Shop was in front of the "mall" entrance, you can still look through the glass windows and see the counter and the bar stools that we used to sit on. There was a 5 & dime, true, named Grants. The location later turned into a store named Fred's, which eventually moved downtown. This area of Prattville above downtown used to be named Prattmont. Straight across the highway, where Subway is located, used to be an A&P grocery store, and a drug store. Somewhere in the parking lot area used to be a huge Country's Barbecue restaurant. Which in the seventies, used to be a shoney's. Where Taco Bell is, used to be a Burger Chef fast food place. On the other side of that was a gas station owned by my uncle. On the same side of the street down by the intersection, a long time ago, used to be a gas station with a very cool statue of a dinosaur out front. Oh, anyway, back to the plaza....
