I have 2 recent coloring books that I tried to published but it was blocked. There is no copyright in it but they rejected it. I do not know what's their reason. They do not have a clear explanation. I already submitted an email to them but still they didn't accept it.

Hi Stephen, I want to print a fiction book that has many full color illustrations, do you recommend printing the hard cover and pages with premium KDP printing? Is the quality of premium printing at KDP good?
@StevePeel
@StevePeel 5 күн бұрын
Hi, hard cover and premium colour is good, though the price is high. If your images are full page or very large, then premium is a good idea, providing your books are affordable for your target audience. If your images only take up a small part of each page, then you might find standard colour is enough. It sounds like you’re putting a lot into this book, so I would be inclined to go through the uploading process and order as proof copy of standard, then make the necessary changes in upload settings and order a proof copy of premium colour, then decide based on that.

A charaqcter is a combination of many influences. Sure some are more stereotypical, others, not so... I like to add disharmonic bits, things that pull different directions in each character. That means that they are a lot harder to write, but way more realistic. And I like to play with expectations. The hot captain... might actually be a really good father!

I just ordered some author copies and planning to sell it, J just want to make sure that I'm not doing something illegal. 😅 Thank you!

Hi there, and thanks for your super helpful videos! I’m reaching out because I’ve been publishing coloring books on KDP for a few months now, and I’m struggling with the print quality. I live in Denmark, and Amazon uses a Polish printer for my orders. Unfortunately, when I receive my author copies, the quality is quite poor. The paper is very thin, making it impossible to use water-based markers without tearing the pages, and the black ink looks more like a light grey. I’ve been trying to find a way to adjust my files in GIMP to get a deeper, richer black for printing, but I’m not sure how to do this effectively. Do you have any suggestions for printing settings in GIMP that could help me achieve the best possible results, given the limitations? Until I can upgrade to better printing solutions, I’d really appreciate any advice to optimize my files for better print quality. Thanks in advance for your help!
@StevePeel
@StevePeel 8 күн бұрын
Hi. Unfortunately, thicker paper is only available when ordering in colour. Regarding the inks, if you're using black in your design, the printing press will print it in the shade you've selected. Searching for a darker black won't make a difference if it appears black on your screen and you've chosen black. I completely understand your concern. The only way to minimise the appearance of light black/grey lines is to use thinner lines so the shade is less noticeable.

@StevePeel
@StevePeel 21 күн бұрын
Keep stretching! But seriously, not being able to see your layout makes it a little difficult. Make sure you place the image/cover into the centre of the canvas before dragging two opposite corners to the corner. If your cover image and canvas are the same ratios, although maybe different sizes, the cover image should drag to each corner perfectly. If not, resize the cover image.

Hi, I would like to publish a book on Amazon about my clay crafts and I want the photos to be of high quality. Should I change the format of the photos to CMYK before inserting them into the Word document that I will convert to PDF before publishing? The Amazon guide only suggests using CMYK format for the book cover, but does not specify the format of the rest of the images And another question, the Amazon guide says that the images have to be between 300 and 450 dpi. However, my photos are of much higher quality. Do I have to convert each image to 450 dpi? If so, do you know what program I could use to do this and not keep the rights to my images? I would really appreciate your help
@StevePeel
@StevePeel 21 күн бұрын
Hi, don't worry about your images being of higher resolution, they will still only publish at whatever the industrial printers are set to, and I obviously presume you've chosen Premium colour. With regard to the images in Word and your high resolution requirements, use CMYK images in the document and when converting to PDF, make sure and compressions are turned off, as Word has a habit of compressing documents. Word settings will show if compression is on or not. Steve

Hello Stephen sir, my question is about images. I know Amazon is strict... has gone stricter to be more precise due to peoples misusing the Amazons system. Now, we are the sufferer out there cz of those bad people. I wanna say KDP still is the best way for an earning source and also... I can't say worst, but it is really troublesome cz of this strictness for us self-publishes. My main question is I did use images in my book from a website. That website images are free for commercial usage, but we have to attribute about that site. I did in my books credit section saying, "The illustrations, icons you see in this book, cover are used from this ..... website". I've contacted that sites customer support via email and told them in detail about this attribution process. They said it's completely fine and the attribution is okay. So, I don't know if I'll get caught or not. I have the free license so everything should be okay. I hope you can feel the little tension that I'm having in my mind although now the worrying has gone almost. KDP tracks us, who did everything right and don't see the people are doing the wrong thing. I hope everything will be okay, I haven't published my book yet, I will tomorrow or maybe day after that. I'm still making sure everything is okay in my book and doing the checking process. Let me know what you think about the attribution thing and all of that. I know we can't say anything strongly in advance cz anything can happen in KDP, that's the truth and we can't do anything about it since they have to power to let us stay and earn or say tata to us.

Hi Stephen! I’m currently working on publishing a recipe book on KDP, and I wanted to ask for your advice. I know that KDP doesn’t offer color printing in some countries, and I’m trying to decide between printing in color or sticking to black and white. Based on your experience, what would you recommend for a recipe book? I’d love to hear your thoughts on what works best in terms of reach and sales across different regions.
@StevePeel
@StevePeel 26 күн бұрын
Hi, while premium colour isn't available in all countries, standard colour is widely accessible. If that's an option for you, I’d recommend choosing standard colour to keep the costs down. Yes, the paper might be slightly thinner, but the book is likely to sell more copies. Full colour is great for glossy pages, but KDP don't have that option. When deciding on pricing, it’s important to base it on your desired earnings. For example, if you aim to earn around $3 (or your local currency), set that margin for both colour and black-and-white editions. Naturally, the black-and-white version will be much cheaper and may appeal to a broader audience, but I personally prefer standard colour. I ensure I get the most value by including plenty of colourful images and elements. Also, only publish one version, either colour or black and white, not both, as you might just have Amazon deciding to block one or both due to the content being the same. Steve.

First thing to do is go back to view your manuscript in Print Preview and check each and every page to see if any text is anywhere near to guidelines. Remember that the text boxes should not cross or even touch those lines. If even one text box crosses on just one page, you will be asked to adjust margins on all pages. If everything looks good, change the file name of the manuscript and upkaid it again. If not, then adjust the margins or set the bleed as suggested.

@StephenPeel This is very helpful. SO-- Just to clarify, If I choose to print my book on Amazon KDP in black & white, by adjusting my photos first to grayscale, then uploading, I should ideally get a better printed book ? I'm assuming this is a viable work-around to get a better quality book without paying for color print. Is that correct? Thank you for this lesson. I look forward to your response.
@StevePeel
@StevePeel Ай бұрын
Cheers. When KDP printing companies print in black and white, they are simply printing in black, on whatever colour paper you're using. That said, if you're image is made up of a lot of subtle shades, as with greyscale, the printers will try to replicate those shades, all the while using black, especially if the printed are the same used for colour printing. As you know, colour is used for greyscale, but you may still get the look you are after.

Did you ever get your Amazon issue resolved? In any case, I have the same "blocked" problem. It came out of the blue. No explanation. No recourse. I'm dealing via 48 hr emails with an alternating team of clerks, apparently in India. The book has sold thro Amazon for 10 years and carries (or carried) a 4.5 reader rating. If this is happening to lots of writers, there's a potential here for a class action lawsuit. This is censorship by a company that has an 80% monopoly on the sales independent authors.

The first thing I'd say is don't get carried away with the idea of CMYK, as for years I only uses RGB and had no problem with KDP print quality. If KDP pronted glossy full page full colour photo pages, Id go CMYK, but for anything else I find RGB colour is great. You should be able to complete your projects using free Canva and RGB. Go for it, create it in RGB colour, publish in Premium colour, purchase an author copy, and see what you thing. Using premium colour gets you thicker paper 🤙

What happens if you choose cream paper. I notice the page count range changes, but is there pros and cons to choosing cream. I thought it might look nicer than plain white but does that increase the cost of a hardcover POD book with KDP? You choose a random page count of 300 but isn't the number of pages suppose to be known, or important for first timers? I know my manuscript pages are 186 and it's not a long novel so is 24 - 776 page range is all I need to enter or do they need an exact number?
@StevePeel
@StevePeel Ай бұрын
Cream paper is great for fiction-like novels, whereas I'd recommend white paper if the book has colour images or is non-fiction. Regarding page count, if you know the count, enter it as close to that as you possibly can because calculations will be made regarding the cover, including the spine and gutter margins. A gutter margin on a page count 24 will be much narrower than a gutter margin on a page count 500.

@@StevePeel You're so good I've been slowly going over your video and almost verbatim typing your instructions my learning curve is so flat ha! You enter 300 pages so the spine area is nice and wide but I wonder if one does that once it gets down to manufacturing or the POD you'd end up if you have a lot less than 300 like me, my regular manuscript is 186 for my Book One, the spine cover would be far to wide so really you need to do the trim and margins etc first or you'd be in trouble, right? Really I like your tutorial because you know how to teach. There are so many with tutorials and they streamline things or go far too fast. If you're working like with MidJourney their images are only 96dpi and WEBP files and when you convert to the required JPG or TIFF the dpi drops to only 75dpi. You got to make sure you get the "--ar2:3" aspect ratio in your MJ description and even then I wonder if it's really at 2560 x 1600 and 300dpi for a 6 x 9 cover like KDP requires or your POD covers end up being very grainy etc. It's a job and a half like you say and I've really been going through the school of hard knocks and first had to extend my launch from 9-1 to 10-1 and now thinking I might have to change to 10-15. Now some saying don't use MD for book covers and spent $60 there for 2 months so far plus they don't say add another $10 a month because you can't use MD without Discord... wow! I haven't even started an author website and being low budget I must make it my musician website too it seems. The covers are so critical and they say you got 5 seconds to hook a shopper with the thumbnail. Any other advice appreciated. Thanks as I am grateful to you!

Go to your account, the part where you upload your books. At the top of the screen you will see Your Account. Click on that and complete the Getting Paid option.
