Wow, thanks for this one! Really cool tips and sounds. One thing I was playing with going off your ideas was using the modulation matrix built into Roar for some additional things. One was that I used the built-in envelope follower to turn the "Tone" knob down as the patch gets louder so it darkens the sound as the feedback freaks out. The other was to map the feedback knob to one of the built in LFO's for some additional feedback and movement. I just wanted to ask: is this patch super rough on CPU for anyone else? I had to turn my buffer up to 256 samples to get it to stop popping and I've got a powerful PC and good interface. I think the M4L devices like LFO are super demanding on the CPU for some reason.
@nicholasthayer50762 ай бұрын
Ahh that's great to hear. And super nice idea to use some internal routing stuff in Roar too - loads of interesting options to explore! On the LFOs front - I've never had any issues myself with LFOs and CPU (and I use A LOT of LFOs), although I have heard from other people they can be a bit power hungry...

Nice MIDI chain!!! Here is what I do to "avoid" the LFO being out of place: First ungroup everything, then group it again including the LFO. It is a mess and I don't understand the reason, but then again... I'm not a programmer hehehe... Also, it is stated on the manual that that is the case. I guess this is the price for so much flexibility... Anyway, thanks for sharing your idea

The 'hocketing' in Complextro I wouldn't really call hocketing. It's a bit different, but to the degree that it's appropriate Complextro took the style from the French House that came before.

Fair comment. I was interpreting it more from different voices taking it in turns and combining to make a unified melody.

Really nice use of those field recordings and great tutorial! That idea splitting the velocities is really interesting, never thought to do that. One of the things I particularly like with using this sort of foley is you get little artefacts from the surroundings. For example, I was at the park with my son and there was a vibraphone for the kids to use. I recorded each of the notes several times and have turned it into an instrument rack. But for each note there is a little bit of background noise of kids playing, leaves rustling etc which aren't too audible but add a lot of texture to the sound.
@nicholasthayer50764 ай бұрын
this sounds really nice! exactly those little artefacts can add a huge amount of character! Glad you like the tutorial!

hello nicholas ! you saved my life ! thank you for great tutorial ! i got question from this music 'opn - again' kzbin.info/www/bejne/qp2plZmco959oNk from 1:26 , i can hear low cello stuff. i think its grainular or generative effect. but i don't know how to make sound like this... can you tutorial this ?
@nicholasthayer50764 ай бұрын
hi there. This is for sure an cool piece of music! I don't really do tutorials on 'how to make a specific sound'. I like to think about making music as a kind of exploration without trying to create something specific - instead I like to think 'what happens if I try this and this and this', and then when something interesting happens I follow that idea. This could be a specific sound or it could be something more broad. In terms of this specific sound, there are a few ways you could approach it: for sure putting a cello sample into a granular synth would work. Also there are some great modified cello plugins you could try such as Emergence Audio 'cello textures'. Or you could try a regular cello synth and then some plugins like Spectral Blur and see what happens.
