That's a great video. I loved seeing the cars and gas station logos from my youth. Honestly, I didn't realize that Delaware had paved roads in the fifties.

@1:52, is that the old Indian River Bridge, over the inlet? I’ve lived through this one (or one that looks like what I remember) and the two that have followed. ❤

My mother told me that , when a young girl in New Castle, said she and her sister used to hear footsteps coming up the back stairs at night. But every time they went to try to catch the owner of the footsteps, as soon as they looked the footsteps stopped and nothing was there to be seen. Another story she told me of old New Castle , a widow would on occasion be awakened to see the ghost of a young black woman standing at the foot of her bed, staring at her, and would vanish when she got out of bed. Some time later while gardening, she found several old bottles buried together with their bottoms up. She researched it and found it was an old superstition of slaves to bury bottles that way in a hearth to ward off unwelcome spirits. She realized she discovered old slave quarters and understood the young black girl. The next time the young ghost appeared, the woman told the ghost her master is long dead and gone and she has nothing to fear. The ghost of the young black girl slowly vanished and was never seen again.

All of these videos are awesome!!! It would be cool to see a “drive down Route 40” if theres any footage available. I know in the one video the recording car starts to drive onto Route 40 from the 13/40 split but then cuts out…as the video was focused on Route 13.

I find your archival film footage fascinating! So much to learn. Since I grew up in Washington State, I knew very little of the building of the DuPont Highway in the early part of the 20th Century. The highway certainly benefited the state. Thank you for posting this video. My heart is in Bethany.❤

Excellent documentary. Now I have a bit of context about what a “caisson” is. The army rolled those along to repair or build bridges.😮 Respect for engineers, for sure!

And all essentially designed, calculated, specified, and the blueprints created, without computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM)! Amazing what humans created with slide rules, electromechanical 'adding machines' and skilled 'draftsmen'! 🌉 🌁 🌉 🌁 🌉 🌁 🌉 🌁 🌉 🌁 🌉 🌁 🌉 🌁
