You may not believe me but if you tie the top wing in at an angle it will aid the fly in a darting motion that will catch more fish.

A cheap pair of hair cutting scissors works very well with cutting these away from the shaft of the feather all at once without that stepped end result.

I first found this pattern on a site called “if I only had one fly”! The pattern has a lot of positive reviews as a trout catcher! So I tied up a dozen! Can’t wait to try them to discover if the reputation holds true!

That fluff is not useless….shorter fluffy Maribou style throats or tails and as dubbing to name but a few!

A hollow pen tube can be used to slip over the eye of the hook to push those hackle fibres into position and used as a half hitch tool to secure the thread. One 360 degrees thread wrap on the pen will make a half hitch but two or more will make a whip finish knot. Not sure how well this might work on the material you are using instead of thread. On thread it works perfectly well! Nice fly!

Really liked this fly as well as the baby sculpin. Can you tell me a little bit about your rigging when fishing under an indicator? Are you fishing other flies with it? Is this your top or point fly?

Big flies like this, usually a 7.5' 0X leader with a couple feet of 1X and a foot of 2X added (so about half the leader is 0X or lighter and sinks fast). Usually tie this to the 2X and have a nymph or soft hackle dropper that's a little flashier and larger than natural foods that are around a foot to eighteen inches behind it on 3X. So like a #12 Prince or Holy Grail Caddis in July or a #14 silver Lightning Bug in August. We call this a second chance fly for fish that move for the big fly to take instead.

@@YellowstoneCountryFlyFishing One last question, are you tying the other fly to this flies hook bend or should this be a dropper off your main line?

Awesome video. New to tying, and squirrel hair is slippery!! First one ended in frustration. But excited to try again, think this will do wonders on smallmouth.

how many is a buncha? or should i ask how many in a buncha? I am from New Zealand, and every time I hear Americans describe a quantity of anything it is referred to as a buncha, so I would like to know the reference count number of a buncha

Great fly, thanks for the demo. Prefer this version without weighted eyes or a bead. Have done really well on smallmouth and largemouth in colder seasons in the midwest running them deep and slow.

The biggest brown I ever (almost) landed was on an "Awesome Hair" (aka Angelina) baitfish that was in the 3-4 inch range. Basically the right-side-up clone of this fly. Looked like a disco ball in the water. It was pulled from my striped bass box. Flash. Flies. Work. When the water conditions are just right this type of fly will provide memories....

What’s your Stillwater rig for presenting this fly: rod, fly line and technique?

Usually either dry-dropper or under an indicator in conjunction with either a small leech or another chironomid/buzzer type with a bead. Occasionally stripped on a sink-tip with a leech. Most of our stillwater fishing is a pretty narrow set of circumstances - late spring and early summer when the fish are shallow - so I don't get fancy with sinking lines, extra long rods, etc.

About hackle pliers....I glue 320 grit on the jaw face...close them as the glue sets to assure jaw alignment. It's not a permanent fix as they apparently wear with use. However while they are Bulldog like they are a pleasure to use.....especially on tiny heckle. Tight lines and nice tie!
