The Apollo astronauts were mostly military aviators, lots of them were naval aviators too, and that type of swearing is basically just the culture in those professions so it's extremely unsurprising it made it's way into their astronaut careers. You'll notice there's actually quite a specific 'way' they swear, even with the cadence they do it in, and that's quite a good 'tell' as to the culture they got it from

I like it, it makes them so much more relatable and down to earth. I think Cernan was caught on a hot mic when Apollo 10s Snoopy staged and tumbled a few times, he quipped "Son of a bitch" as he and Stafford wrestled with the controls to get stabilized and back up into orbit. I think that was broadcast live too and people criticized NASA for allowing it. Pete Conrad certainly had a tongue on him too.

It's not absurd at all, it's why it has shock value, that's the entire point dude. And there's nothing new about it, Paul used the ancient Greek equivalent of the word "shit" in the Bible even, almost 2,000 years ago. Should words having shock value not exist? And how can a word have shock value if it isn't improper to use it in polite conversation?

My wife made a big deal about swearing around my daughter. I didn’t care, but her family swears way more than I do. I remember when my daughter first dropped an F-bomb. I told my wife, “That’s from your side of the family, not me.”

This is awesome. People know about Apollo 13 obviously, but pretty much every Apollo mission had hairy moments. There was the radar problem on Armstrong’s landing, Wally Schirra’s head cold which made him basically tell his bosses to go fuck themselves, and any number of other malfunctions. These guys were human and reacted like humans.
