Super update with mum again, Rufus. Your mum never gives up on any animal, be it lamb or calf. The weather seemed to change all of a sudden this month. The sun came out and everything looked better. The trees are green once again and the birds are singing. I loved the way her cows were standing at the gate watching all their mates out in the grass, while they were still locked in. But they weren't complaining. They appeared to understand what mum was saying to them. So sweet!

Great to see your world warming up. We're at the end of calving with a few less than expected, but then Barry the Bull isn't as young as he used to be (and some of our ladies are pushing 'elderly'). We're going to keep one of our little boys intact so, when he goes back in in December, it will be Barry's last hurrah. A friend gave us a young, proven dorper ram (in return for Beef and homemade bacon😉) so he's currently understudying Patches the Ram, who will soon be retired to a friend's property. Older chickens are scaling back for winter and the newer girls won't come into lay for 3-4 weeks, so not many eggs. Bees are still out in profusion on sunny days but we didn't take honey this year. We've had our first proper frost this week (-5C), four weeks later than usual. Standard autumn-going-into-winter here.

Barry is a great name for the bull! 😂 I hope the understudying is going well ! Enjoy what’s left of your Autumn 💛

I've never seen toad in the hole outside of the UK, I didn't know about it before my second time there (I'm French). It is very British. Same with Yorkshire pudding, we know of it, but I only had it in Yorkshire.

Good morning from Ludgershall. That was a slightly different format, but it worked well! No real need to worry over cows pushing each other around. As your mum knows, each group have a pecking order, but when another group are introduced, that order has to be reasserted. It's what animals do. But without horns, no damage is done, except to their pride! Yes. It's been a wet start to the year. The water table is very high, hence the flooded fields. We've also had some very mild nights. Frequently, the temperature has only fluctuated by one or two degrees in 24 hrs and with very few frosts, many flowers and shrubs are blooming early.

We had first calf of the season last week (we breed on an 18-month cycles, not 12-months), just as the weather cools off in Autumn. Best of luck for your calving season🤞 Our 700L deep freeze died last weekend and it had 1 steer, 1.5 sheep and half a pig in it. We managed to parcel it out to friends and family while we waited 5 days for a replacement. The dramas of farm life. 😉 My recipe of the month is Hot Cross buns
