That is the rule for the old-IBR Plan (IBR for loans before 2014). 25 years is the key distinction.

@ thanks for the response. However, I am still confused. Are you saying that because I graduated in 2008 and consolidated in 2012 that I have to wait 25 years before any forgiveness? So just being younger means you’re better off? Why wouldn’t my IBR plan just take on the 20 year forgiveness scenario?

The rules that govern your student loans are set in your promissory note and the laws created by Congress. Congress typically cannot make laws retroactively. So, if you took out the loans before 2014 (if you graduated in 2008, your original loans probably were taken out between 2004 and 2007), your consolidation loan has a date of 2012. So, the rules that govern your repayment options are the laws that were in place then. Legally, you signed the loan documents and agreed to all the programs and options at the time you borrowed. Congress then added a "New IBR" in 2014, but they can't go back in time. So all NEW loans issued after 2014 get the new programs. So new options came out. You could theoretically have consolidated again and got a new loan, with these new terms. In fact, if you'd taken advantage of the Biden IDR waiver and consolidated last year, you'd be done already as well, since they were recounting payments for new consolidation loans. That program is expired now. You can't go back in time despite how frustrating that is.

@ 😢. Being a 17 year old minor when signing and starting college I am assuming doesn’t matter if I wanted to try and “fight” it? It seems everyone essentially 30+ years old that went to college have been the ones punished the most. Any chance for any partial forgiveness or help for normal people like me has been denied or ineligible. 🤦🏻‍♂️

@@TheAeroRising There's no minimum age limit to receive Federal student loans (they don't operate like any other type of debt). You're almost done with your loans though it feels far away. I'd simply suggest making sure you pay the minimum required for the next 2 years and then be done and don't think twice about the past. Focus on building wealth for the future. Some things to consider - contributing to a 401k/403b, traditional IRA, or HSA. These lower your income (thus lowering your student loan payment), and they allow you to build wealth so when you're done with your loans you're not just debt free, but you have a positive net worth.

Maybe. It depends on the school. You cannot get federal funds but some colleges use it for their own awards.
