Great lecture! My ancestors from Ireland, surname "Rose", were there for some time. Probably lived at Almshouse for a short time before moving back to Baltimore City.

My grandfather worked in the Texas quarry and my father lived in the tenant houses that were mentioned early on in the video. My father used to swim at the swim club and tell stories about people drowning there and how difficult it was to retrieve the bodies. He would never let us swim there. Said it was too dangerous.

I was in Two Guys (the store built on top of that) as a little kid in early 70s thru 1980. Back then, that was always a crime ridden hell hole. Even worse now. Not sure why Baltimore celebrates this culture.

I think 14:58 was the Edison Highway bridge over the tracks (used to be Armco Steel). I was a little kid and was not sure what was going on, but I saw the train.., I think it had a flag draped over one of the cars.., not sure about that. You walk by that area now, or even back then, you would be robbed or shot.

Wow! I wish I had known this volunteer dig was going on back in 2014 (I think u stated that is when it started). I was born and lived there in the late 1960s until it went to hell around 1978-ish. That clearing on the north side of Herring Run along Parkville is where I played baseball (Brehms Boys Club and Eastwood). Also played soccer their (Little Flower) and soccer on the other side of Herring Run where there are still fields. There were no trails on the North side of Herring Run so we never explored and this is all fascinating to me. To think I was about 100 feet from all that. We would drink from the Halls Springs water spring and pee up in that structure near it. Where your map says Ivy Hill Mansion used to be a baseball field used by Little Flower, I think the fence is still there. Fun fact, in the same spot where Ivy Mansion is marked, some unknown guy hung himself in the late 1970s. I would love to check all that out, but that area is so plagued by violence and drugs.., no way. Thank you for putting this on KZbin.

at 22:35 in this video the building is mislabeled. It is not Whiteholm in Newport RI, it is the rear of the Uplands Mansion in Baltimore, recently burned.

There is nothing worth saving in that cesspool called Baltimore. This speaker is your typical woke liberal. Rather than speaking of the hard work provided by ALL of the workers he wants to segregate the workers by race. A true racist!!!

The correct source for the portrait of marble dealer Hugh Sisson ( seen at 20:28 - 21:45 ) is page 421 of "History of Baltimore City and County, from the earliest period to the present day:: by John T Scharf, published in 1881. It does not appear in the "Monumental City" by George Howard , as stated in the talk. I apologize for this error.

Phil, is Hugh Sisson (CEO of Heavy Seas Brewery in Halethorp) related? He's *gotta* be. Also, I know Stone Lake off Gorman Road in Savage, MD was originally a marble quarry. We used to swim there as kids after it was abandoned. The property has been developed into residential units. It is DEEP now.

I am from Pittsburgh and remember being at my friends house reading Sports Illustrated and coming across an article on Camden Yards. I was blown away and fell instantly in love with it, just seeing the pictures. I immediately realized what a dump Three Rivers Stadium was and desperately wanted Pittsburgh to get our own version of Camden Yards. It’s still crazy to me that very few parks were able to match its glory. Thinking PNC Park and Oracle Park are the only ones that came close. Thanks for the thorough overview.

I never had the feeling I was in a prison at the Original Lake Clifton High School 78/79 79/80 didn't do the 80/81 And it was my Zone School #40 it was not the school I chose which was Mervo but I was not excepted at Mervo for some reason or another 🐊⚖️🐊⚖️🐊 But Lake Clifton Sr. High School building wasn't the issue but the fact that it was a school that almost any one could attend to fill the building up. 6 principals ,4 unit and one head principal and one vice principal. Lake had potential and it was always comfortable in the building with air conditioning. 🌟🌟✨🌟🌟

Lake Clifton High School was a awful school 78/79 ! 79/80 and should have neen 80/81 but that didn't happen because of some real BS and it had some folks working at the school that should not have been there. At the time the principal was a Mr. Mohammed and after him a Dr. Stanley it also so had 4 unit principals and of course a Vice principal at that time it was a woman name Mrs. Taylor and she was serious about her job. But one of the unit principals toke some important certificates & documents from me and told me he wanted to copy them , I was okay with that but he never gave them back and claimed I never gave him any certificates and documents. ⚖️ To my knowledge in the years y went there it wasn't 10 or 15 white students in the school. It was always said that it was going to sink and it did on more than one way. 🐊🐊🐊🐊

I was told-- having never seen it in person, that the older quarry is under Beaver Dam Road while the newer quarry, the source of Mar Villa marble, is now the Beaver Dam Swim Club. You can partially orient yourself by looking to the right well behind the High's store where the old marble "Saw Mill" building is located and that was closer to the original quarry pit. Until I locate better map references- this is all I can say. Thanks very much for you interest!

Thank you for this. The Lewises, Wines, SITE, and these buildings continue to fascinate me. It is neat that the Forest Showroom, as of my visit in 2023, looks basically the same under the ownership of the West End Presbyterian Church, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts also operates the "BEST Cafe" with a piece of the exterior of the Venturi showroom on display (and BEST swag for sale). Also, the plaza outside the Tennessee Aquarium is a delightful, surviving example of SITE's work!

That woman presenter came off as the most impressive racist I have seen in recent years. Baltimore is currently a city that is majority African American. Yet this seemingly racist woman could "Not Be Bothered" to showcase "Provident Hospital" the only black own run and administered Hospital in what was then a very racist Baltimore City. This woman disgusts me with her cherry picking and willful avoidance of positive black contributions to the medical and architectural life of our city. Provident Hospital was essentially a one of a kind institution in the city yet this woman did not consider it worthy of mention or note. She is a disgrace to this fine organization. Provident Hospital lived for many years in Baltimore. Provident Hospital excelled at emergency services with many of its ER patients presenting with bullet or stab wounds. The ER Doctors at Provident Hospital became so skilled in handling GSW and Stab wounds that it's black patients would survive gunshots and stab wounds that killed white LEO's and others taken to the big "Downtown Hospitals." So well known in the community was Provident Hospital's skill at resolving GSW's and stabbings that white police started demanding to be taken to Provident if shot or stabbed. Provident Hospital a black owned and operated medical center had a rich history shaping the Baltimore Community. Too bad this so called woman historian was too lazy to take a look. The Death of Provident Hospital came when mountains of debt associated with it's New Liberty Heights Building merged it with then Failing Lutheran Hospitals creating what was called Liberty Medical Center which went bust soon after. All but one of the Lutheran Hospital Buildings remain. I think its called Turek House all other uniquely Lutheran Hospital cream colored \ beige Buildings were demolished. Architecturally Lutheran Hospital at 630 Ashburton Street was originally envisioned to be BEAUTIFUL a modern 7 or so floor 1960's era bland tower that replaced the Hebrew Orphan's Building. What was built was a much smaller new impatient and operating room complex on Rayner Avenue and Braddish Avenues . The building was tan with mad splashes of color. The original design of the new Lutheran Hospital final addition was breath taking putting me in mind of the Old Saint Agnes 60's era Main Hospital done in tan. I grew up right down the street when Lutheran Hospital was still in operation and it was a source of pride in our community. The remaining building had a twin connected by an over the street enclosed climate controlled walkway. I gush so much about Lutheran Hospital because these old buildings caused me to LOVE ARCHITECTURE! Lutheran Hospital's new buildings had the design aesthetic of many of the sets seen on Lost In Space. Simple clean designs with no unneeded frills. Concrete glass and stone with wild plastic colored bits thrown in.

I attended all the Lake Clifton Schools. Clifton Annex on North Avenue....Clifton Park on Harford Road. I use to look out of my classroom window at the construction of Lake Clifton. I went from Clifton Park to Lake Clifton High School; that was the year of 1971I graduated in 1975. Big bush platform shoes and plaid bell bottom pants. The first year was pretty bad, there were a lot of bad apples there starting trouble for everyone. Mrs. Johnson the first Principal did the best she could but those young trouble makers proved to be too much for her. But Then...they called in who I call, the Marine Corps Drill Instructor Of High School Principals! Mr. Boyse Mosley. Remember the movie " Lean On Me " in the movie their Principal's name was Mr. Clark...well Mr. Mosley was our Mr. Clark down to the double T !! He was time enough for the bad apples, They either ended up in jail or got kicked out. I was there when the attempt was made to desegregate Lake Clifton, let's just say the white students came in the front door and went right out the back door, it was total CHAOS !!. But I did get to see how the system provides more for white kids than black kids. There was a computer class many of us wanted to take but could never get to take the class because we were told that the computer's were not available; the minute the white kids arrived man it was like magic, computer's for that class were everywhere. Music was my Major Mrs Lucille Brooks and Mr. Tilman were my music instructors. Mrs. Brooks put me over the first Gospel Choir for Lake Clifton ( I played Piano ); man what great memories. Currently I'm owner of my music production company " Lux Mundi Music Productions" and founder of " The World Music Video Ministry " ...just released , worldwide a new video and single " Give You The Glory " I'm also the host of my own radio show " Word and Worship Radio Show" on the Kingdom Purpose Radio Network. I'm grateful to have been among the first to graduate from that very prestigious High School, it was the largest in the region at that time. But it saddens my heart to see what it has become.

Chambers went to the State Dept security officer in 1938 and turned himself in. He named Hiss as a communist but not as a spy. He liked Hiss and tried to talk him out of communism before he , chambers, left the party. Hiss sued chambers for libel and during the deposition facts came out implicating Hiss for spying. Do you know anything about the Vennona papers? Why these old lefties keep defending these people is beyond me! Read Tanenhaus’s book along with witness and read the footnotes.

Absolutely awesome! I have lived in AA County all my life. Through Ancestry I have learned that my ancestors arrived in Baltimore in the 1790s. My 6th Great-Grandfather fought at the battle of North Point! I had extensive family living in Baltimore during the early 1800s. The family was actually split and fought on different sides during the Civil War. Through census records I have plotting their home addresses on Google Earth. This map brings everything to a whole new level!
