Ive read Barbra’s book on dealing with aggression in dogs. She brings up a very important point on how your dog should walk behind you because he respects you and not just because he has no choice . But I still question, in what way do I show my dog I am the pack leader and get him to respect me so that he will not walk in front of me? Would it just be solely through body language?(stepping in front, asserting position as the leader through body language)

So great to see this video and a really lovely surprise to hear Gemma mention Holly by name. Please could you let Gemma know that since we adopted Holly from FOSTBC she has thrived and is doing really well, she has become an absolutely indispensable part of our family. She has such a strong and unique character and is enjoying her very best life with lots of love and outdoors activities every day. Thanks 🐾

As an adopter of a FOSTBC dog I am aware of the immense passion that Barbara and the FOSTBC team have for the rescue dogs. Our first FOSTBC dog had some issues that I needed to continue to work on and with training for me from Barbara he turned into a lovely chilled out dog. I now have a FOSTBC youngster who is a fab little lad. This is a great overview and insight into the work behind the scenes at FOSTBC.

I know they have very important jobs to do. However I still think it’s the perfect dog for all occasions!!! Well except attack dog. Border collies don’t understand offensive violence. Hell they barely understand defensive violence!!!

Barbara - after our chat today about my reactive golden retriever and having watched this very infirmative video, where loose lead walking is concerned, how do you decide when to allow your dog to have some sniff time? Is it as a reward for having walked behind you calmly? Luca is a huge sniffer, so it'll be hard at the beginning for him to walk behind and not be able to sniff. So at what point would I release him to sniff before calling him back to the behind position? Thsnks!

as all dogs are different and we have already discussed your dog on the telephone please ring me with a query rather than put on here as the info needs to relate to your dog and not dogs in general.

Ok how do I stop him biting lead and come back as he is deaf please?
@mainlinebordercolliecentre93993 жыл бұрын
deaf dogs are amazing I have one, he is hand reared and lovely. if your dogs is biting the lead he needs to be taught a leave it command and if you play tuggy games with him he will think it is correct to bite the lead. when he does it, stand still and don't tug or let him tug the lead and if he doesn't stop put your foot on the lead so he can't get leverage to tug it. once he stops wait a few seconds to let him calm down and then praise him.
@marionhall99933 жыл бұрын
@@mainlinebordercolliecentre9399 thanks I tried this it didn’t work sorry! I don’t play tug with him, I drop rope but he grabbed it again, I tried standing on it , he is very clever and anticipates my moves. I tried skipping it and flicking in snake like fashion and that works for a while. It’s early days , I just got to be patient I think. He is one step ahead of me all the time!

Gotta practice this. My poor rescue boy aged about 8, abused physically by his first ‘owner’ (removed from him). and emotionally by his second (several years in a flat, taken out ‘occasionally’ by vehicle to a park where a ball was thrown) and clearly no lead sense. Otherwise he’s such a good boy. Easily scared by any hint of raised voice. Not driven by ‘treats, probably has a degree of hearing loss and utterly obsessed by any ‘ball’. When removed from his second owner (who wanted him ‘put down’), the nurse rescuing him found just one toy at home. A single ball. His previous owners are lucky that I do no not know where they live 😢

Nervous dogs get a lot of confidence if you stand in front of them when they feel under threat. The way we train them is very gentle but its also parenting them.

He's a lovely lad and I so hope from my heart that you find the right home for him. bC's are a challenge but sooo worth it. I have at hometwo beautiful girls, one 13 and one just gone 14...... They are the last 2 of the 5 we used to have..... Nell, Gwen, Finn, Cariad and Flossie. Cariad and Finn were maternal brother n sister and it's mad but they knew.... , and they loved one another best, Finn left us a year last Christmas and she still misses him. I wish that I could take Bob, he looks like my Cariad, my only B/W. I don't live near to you and it is important that whoever takes him in is prepared to put the time in that he so needs and that you are giving him. Please let us know on KZbin how he gets on.....Bless Him. Much love to Bob and to you with the thanks of a Border Collie Mum and I'm sure so many others. Tanya. Xx

He is a beautiful boy and I would love to make my home his. I have 2elderly lady Border Collies here at home, Cariad is 14 on 7 November and Floss is 13. They are the youngest and only 2 left with us now after having four. Girls and my laddie Finn . My girls were and are a joy and called Nell, Gwen, Cariad n Flossie Moo cos she can be a real moo at times. My laddie Finn was my only boy and he was also a big boy and when he left us was around 5 weeks from being 15. I mis the ones passed but rejoice in the girls I still have for a short while. Cariad has some health issues, heart, stomach and bad arthritis but they both are under a wonderful vet that we have been with for almost 30, yrs so they are monitored and kept comfortable in Cariads case and medicated when necessary...... Cariad is on quite a lot of meds but Floss only takes you move n propalin. I would be interested in seeing Bob and if he could take to me..... He looks a beautiful dog and so gentle and trusting...... Stay safe everyone and my love n scratches to little Bob. Xx

Hi, Olivia! Border Collies are heart stealers, aren't they. My wife and I just lost our Nyshia three days ago, when she was hit by a vehicle going out our lane on the farm where we live. She was just short of 7 months old, and we had had since she was 6 weeks old. We're both devastated by it! She was the first Border Collie we had ever owned, and she was still just a puppy. We knew she liked to chase vehicles and try to "herd" them as is their nature, and we were pretty careful except for this one time, but that's all it took. Be very careful with your two collies, as I'm sure you are. Thank you for this space to say a little something. We miss Nyshia terribly. The people where we got her are not far from us and will be having new puppies in the Spring, so we'll probably see if we can have another one. God bless!

@@irvingnerdbaum7256 my heart goes out to y'all I am so sorry!! They are very precocious puppies and always want to be everywhere and in everything. Im sorry for your loss and though a good dog is never replaced, I hope your future puppy brings plenty more joy into your life.

@@oliviaperalta9720 Thank you, Olivia. It's hard to be without her, now. I'm retired and am alone while my wife is at work, and Nyshia gave us company and joy even though she did "puppy things", sometimes. She was so full of life and energy and fun to play with. In the meantime, we want to go see her mom and dad at our friends place and maybe get a little comfort that way. Thanks, again! We'll let you know when we get a new puppy, if you like.

Heh.. Not my border collie... She's a couch potato... She'd rather be inside cuddling up snuggling right up to you... She'll only go out to potty and want to come right back in ... And no she is not sick... She's always been like that... Every dog is an individual... While there may be traits... You can't say every dog of that breed will do exactly this or that... Also environment and training play a huge role in a dogs development..
