Tchaikovsky played it through for his mentors when he first wrote it, didn he... i wonder if he just played the piano part or did he try some sort of solo arrangement. i would so love to have been present... 🙂 thankyou for sharing this..

I don't understand what people have against this piece particularly (in terms of its "randomness" or "dissonance"); I feel like this piece establishes a very specific harmonic world and soundscape, and it is possible to notice and appreciate the individual "particles" (as one comment described) rising and the way they interfere with each other. I would find this kind of reaction more understandable if this were, say, Ferneyhough's piano writing, but this is quite understandable in some places.
