Heal shifter. I am new to motorcycles and looking for my first on, at 71 years old. Too bad top speed is only 50 Ish but that is obviously meant to be, this is a trail bike. That said, the heel shifter … when you were explaining it, I though that maybe sometimes I’d be standing,… shifting while standing might be another reason for the heel… I don’t know but it’s just a thought.

You should have had a .25 inch drive torque wrench that Harbor or any other supplier sell for the lower torque values. 3/8th drive torque wrench are not designed for the lower values. In short it is not a Harbor torque wrench issue.

Thanks for great , honest vids. I just started dual sporting last year. Went 10k around the USA on my CRF300 Rally. I intended to ride the TAT, but I camped out on BLM & hit local trails instead. I got honest with my skill level & wanted to be close to civilization, in case I got in a pickle (solo). I met a fella on 450 L & been thinking about adding that to my collection. The 300 doesn’t have “snap” for clearing obstacles. Are you still in Florida? Would love to do some moto camping weekends! I don’t have any riding comrades & I could use some experience. I looked into off-road school before my trip. I decided not to- it’s stupid expensive! No regrets! I just rode within my limits & improved a little along the way. I only went over the bars like 5times……that’s only once, every 2k miles😅

Thanks for taking the time to comment and tell your story! The TaT sounds like a lot of fun and is something I’d like to tackle later in life when the kids are out of the house. This rally helped me realize that the 450RL was the wrong tool for the jobs I like to do, which is tight technical riding when in NY, and sand riding here in Florida. I’ve since switched to a GasGas 300ex two stroke and it is a game changer! I wholeheartedly feel I could’ve finished this rally with the 300ex, as the 450RL was just too much “gotta go fast”, lending to it being a handful in tight and technical woods riding. Also, it is extremely heavy for sand riding here in Florida. It may be the ultimate weapon for the TaT though, as it is great on roads and trails where you can keep momentum or a higher rate of speed. That’s just not what I was doing with my bikes, however I do feel this bike is an amazing dual sport bike if used as a true dual sport (not a woods racing bike). If in Florida, you may wanna check out some of the Dixie Dual Sport events. The hold dual sport rally’s that cross Florida, and more. These are actual dual sport events and not hard enduros (like the Quarry Run), and the 300 or 450rl would be amazing in them. Some people even use the larger bmw and KTM touring bikes in these, so the 450RL would be a weapon! The family and I like to ride at Croom motorcycle area in Brooksville (all sand), and Bone Valley ATV park in Mulberry. Bone Valley is very user friendly and beginner level, so that would likely be a good place to target for you. Maybe we’ll cross paths there one day!

Got through this mini series. I was thinking that most of this run looks easy, partly because of the camera angle and the pacing. I have done most of my trail riding on dry loose dirt/gravel at Rampart Range here in Colorado, where most of it is dry, loose gravel. A good single day ride usually puts in about 30 miles and I'll be somewhat exhausted. My downfall from this would be dealing with the wet rocks and steep hills. XR250 currently, still debating on the 450RL almost 5 years later.
@John5XR
@John5XR 16 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! Camera angle definitely killed the inclines, which were really tough on the high strung 450RL. The RL is ok for high speed stuff, but for anything slow and technical, it’s a nightmare. I’d say 300 two stroke if you wanna do stuff like I did in this rally, but if you’re hitting more roads and faster stuff, the RL should be good

First world problems, which of the 8 bikes to choose for the days riding. We are a spoiled bunch of wimps, complaining about having a bike that if taken back in time (any time up to about 1985) would have beaten all comers in scrambles/motocross/dirt track. Take a look at the rest of the world where motorcycles are used as the only means of transport. They ride through what is laughingly called "single track" with a fridge on the back of a big wheeled stepthrough. If you listen to the Sages on youtube you have to have at least 5 bikes just to get by, ranging from an ultralight two stroke for woods running through to a 3 litre tourer with fridge and hifi system to go to the next town for coffee. Getcha self a light dualsport/ trail bike and goen ride, make do with the short comings and enjoy the ride. Stop bitchin about how it was too hard and you need yet another bike, get a stepthrough, put a fridge on the back then tell me how hard that is 😜

The 300L Legend appears!! Man you were impressive on that bike, but looking back I wonder if my 450 had too much power and just spun the wheel everywhere, where the 300 probably applied the power better and was more controllable. Not to mention I don’t think my ability was where yours was, so let’s not discount that factor too! lol! Are you and/or Arturo gonna try this event again in the future? I’ll do it again on my 300 two stroke, I think I can do it on that bike.

Just binge watched the whole series. At first I wondered why the CRF450RL wasn't a good bike for the course. Then when I got to part 5, I thought "Okay. Tough, but doable." Video six and seven definitely looked like stuff I wouldn't want to take the 450 on, and I've got the aftermarket ECU and Rekluse clutch (which makes it all MUCH easier). The later videos looked like Beta XTrainer territory.

I loved reading this! Not only because it was interesting enough to binge watch, but that you wouldn’t wanna take your better equipped RL through this either, which makes me feeling like the bike wasn’t cut out for it. The weapon of choice for this rally was definitely the Austrian 300cc two strokes (which I now have, and it makes technical riding so easy it’s almost not fair!)

Based upon your experience, do you think the Nihilo foot pegs are too aggressive? My kids ride motocross and ride their Stacyc bikes often, but I'm not sure if the foot pegs need to be that aggressive for Stacyc riding. I'm concerned about them tearing up their shoes or their shins. They often ride with short, t-shirts, and sometimes even no shoes. Not smart just a reality. They don't use their moto boots when riding their Stacycs. Thanks in advance for your feedback.
@John5XR
@John5XR 18 күн бұрын
The main reason I went with the Nihilo pegs was because they are representative of what the kids will have on a dirt bike. The foot platforms on the Stacyc are fine, but if your kid rides dirt bikes (like mine), the pegs are more familiar

Torn between the monkey styling and CT 70 styling. Im not a fan of the front fender or seat style. Why didn't they make it the same as the original. I also wish the decal was the same as the original but said trail 125. I rode both monkey and this growing up and so glad to see rhem back.

The Monkey is more playful with the clutch if you like riding aggressive, the Dax is more laid back and cruise-worthy. Both should be kept off fast roads and enjoyed as play bikes. Check out my older videos about the Monkey, I put it through just about everything, but eventually sold it as it was the least used in my fleet

I was worried at first about the semi automatic clutch system and I was actually considering the Monkey instead because of this. However I chose the Dax as I have owned a couple of ST 50’s in my younger years and also a couple of Skyteam Dax, which are Chinese replicas. But I am soooooo happy with the semi automatic clutch now, that I would rather ride with that than manual clutch. I know some people find it hard to downshifting smoothly .. but its so easy, once you understand that it actually has 2 clutches .. one is when the revs are below xxx rpms, and the other one can be engaged manually.. when riding in 4.th gear and you wanna downshift to 3.th you of course need to reduce the speed by decreasing the throttle thrust and then when you press the gear lever down with the heal and hold it down without releasing it, you have manually engaged the clutch and it will not engage before you let go of the lever again..so you can use your foot/heal as a clutch easily and smooth, riding with one hand 😊 I guess all the Trail 125 and Super cub 125 owners know all about this already.

I used the hex key to take out the battery, there are 2 bolts to hold it. It's pain to put back, but won't fall out that easily. A bit sad thing is the place around the battery shroud. While attempting to put battery shroud back, I lost one of the clips in the abyss of metal frame. Not sure how to get it back :) Place for documents fits the license and owner's manual in a waterproof sack.

😅😅😅😅 i lost a couple of clips in the abyss also, one as i was removing the cover to the battery and yeah I have lost 2 crews in the abyss as I was replacing the air filter to a DNA… now i stuff some paper tissue in the gab of the abyss whenever i work on that part of the bike. There is a way to get those up from the abyss but I guess I need to almost dismantle half the side of the bike to do that.. oh and now I dont even have the cover on the battery, because I like to have easy access to the charging poles.
