I love the way the hunger games shows the cruelty in eveyone and how easy it is to other and dehumanize eachother, but at the same time how the human race has rebellion embedded in its soul, compliance and rebellion. How important and dangerous human relationships can be. Class issues, police brutality, how children are used by governments etc

Honestly i feel the argument about having children very much. At the ripe age of 27 i do have the urge to build a family. But just looking at the world around us makes me not want to. In one of the "better" countries its still too scary, inhumane and the climate chages are just too real. And all everyone is doing is pointing fingers and telling them to fix it while everyone should try to. And just because others aren't doing shit doesn't mean that we also dont do shit. It just makes everything so frustrating. And the housing crisis, money crisis and so many countries where you cant afford to live just makes me so depressed. But especially the climate one is big for me. We're looking at extreme change as early as 2050 and that's only 25 years away. It's just all fucked 😫

Cato and the careers aren't evil in any way, I always felt bad for them really, they have been heavily propagandized into thinking what they are doing is an honor. Since they come from a more comfortable district (that wins almost every year) they don't see the twisted cruelty that the games actually are.

8:25 I’m not sure if you’ve read the books, so spoilers ahead. If you like the movies you’ll love the books. . . . Another reason why Haymitch is the way he is, is because he was punished by Snow for his win in the Quarter Quell. Like all the tributes, Snow punishes the victors despite the lavish lifestyle and celebrity status that comes with it. All of Haymitch’s loved ones were murdered as a result of his exploitation of the arena during his Games. He is completely alone on top of watching all of these children die and he is forced to relive the games every single year.

@18:07, I think President Snow was referencing LUCY GRAY when he said "if a girl from District 12 can defy the Captiol and walk away unharmed"...

Can we all agree that the hunger games themselves undermine the regime? They are the literal face of oppression, the perfect reason to rise up. When you make people watch their kids kill each other in the cruelest humiliation ritual, rebellion is to be expected. No sound government would ever have implemented the games in the first place

At least the world of hunger games had clearer lines between good, evil and grey areas. In the real world we don’t have that luxury and almost everything is starting to look either grey or evil. At least they aren’t pretending to care for their children while also allowing their genocide like we are.

Thank you for watching!! I think I preferred focusing on the movies bc the books have an enormous amount of material that I found a little daunting when making this video as it is the first one of this type I created. I did however make one on president Snow and TBOSBAS which has a lot of emphasis on the book if you wish to watch that one it’s on my main channel:))

I think everyone needs to watch The Hunger Games ALONG WITH The Handmaid's Tale. While I absolutely love what THG does, both the later movies and later books glamorize "revolution." It's really only the prologue of the last book that explains hard enough what it all meant. I think The Handmaid's Tale better illustrates the day-to-day of an oppressive government, attempting to topple that government, and the retaliation and lingering impacts that ensue.

This is a great analysis of THG series. I agree with you, that it is great at depicting the cruelty of war, the dictatorship and the total impact, that it has on people. Well, one thing, on which I disagree with you, is the comparison between THG and TMR, because The Maze Runner tries to depict different aspects of dystopy. It touches the topics of global warming, spread of deseases and trials used for searching for the cure, that are made on children. Therefore, at least as I see it, The Maze Runner can't be compared with The Hunger Games as both are approching different topics.

One subtle theme in Hunger Games was the power of atrocity. The Hunger Games served to unite the Capitol district and get the citizens of the Capitol invested. This also served to get the citizens of District 1 and 2 and the other career districts invested in Panem unity. Most of the investment in atrocities was through sponsorship of one of the tributes, a vicarious degree of participation is atrocities. There is never enough power to force people to give their all--when people do only what they're forced to do, empires fall. "Doing nothing" is the nuclear option of a labor strike. "Doing nothing" undermined East Germany to the point of collapse. Participation in atrocities got Capitol District citizens to willingly and actively support the rulers of Panem. "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" drove this home to me--vicarious participation in the atrocities of war has a long and successful history. In "1984" the Two Minutes Hate was one of many vicarious participation atrocities that Big Brother used to control Oceania. In the Hunger Games, the fact that other districts were killing off YOUR district's children also served to make enemies of those districts, and it felt good when the other districts' tributes fell. Atrocity--just the medicine ordered by the doctor.

It isn’t though. The book was brutally realistic. This is a distorted fantasy lense. Just like all moved based on dystopian fiction they erase brown people and make everyone attractive. Reality is that malnutrition makes you ugly. Poor diet, no food or water makes you hideous. Most poor people are ugly BECAUSE they are poor! So no one in the main cast is brown because why people see brown people in main character placements as too real so they hate it and call it “woke” or “pandering” and none of the people are ugly because of the same reason. The book MIGHT be good, there are a bunch of very unrealistic flaws in the writing. But you only enjoy the movie cause it feeds into the fantasy that in the future white people will still be the center of attention, even if it’s the end of the world. And everyone is hot during the apocalypse

I have to disagree with you here. I think among YA dystopias, Collins does the best job in representing Black ppl for instance. Being Black myself, seeing a character like Rue while being around a similar age was very interesting and touching as I could see myself in her. Is most of the cast White? Yes absolutely and it could’ve been more diverse but I think this stems more on Hollywood’s own issues with representation than Collin’s herself. Imo, the way she wrote about Rue, Thresh and Reaper was done in a compassionate and not demeaning way which unfortunately is how Black characters are often portrayed in movies and literature. I cannot speak for Brown ppl as I am not Brown and I do see how the main series lacked a lot of representation which is very disheartening but I do think they did a much better job with that with the prequel.
