This lasted only one series as it was immediately considered too dated with Glam Rock coming in, and, in my opinion, it already looked 1967, but still entertaining. Roger was talented and avuncular (despite the seventies serial killer glasses) but it's not surprising this didn't last, as it was pretty dated for '71. Saying that, Val Doonican still had shows in the eighties 😅

It did not look dated for 1971. The 60s had barely ended. The beginning of every decade always looks similar to the decade before, until new styles really take hold as the middle of a decade approaches. If it were 1974 or 75 I would agree with you. But people back in 1971 would not have sat in front of their tv thinking this was “dated.” Not everybody was into the glam rock just like not everybody was into disco when it came out.

I don't fully agree, due to seeing a lot of shows from the time, such as Top of the Pops, In Concert and The Old Grey Whistle Test, the latter of which started this year. Roger, bless 'im, was an older presenter for such a show and seemed a few years behind with the cravats etc. Whilst I agree new decades have hangovers from the previous, the seventies seemed less so. The amount of change between 1966 and 1971 was exceptional among the young. When this show was up for renewal (possibly early '72 by that point), ITV would have found the Austin Powers-like choreography and easy-listening covers of sixties hits pretty dated compared to the other shows. Even in comparison to TOTP (which still had older producers forcing the odd crooner on), this seems a lot more 1967, but in colour. The set looks lifted from a sixties US show. I can imagine some (not all) of the young rolling their eyes a bit, apart from when the few current acts came on. It was probably expensive too and TV companies were struggling at the time. I didn't/don't mean to disparage it, it's a comment on the format. These are entertaining either way and Roger was very talented.
