Great video. Thank you so much.I am planning one in 2 weeks, but it seems like they don't allow wild camping any more now. Howdid you get your information? Thanks

Thanks! Yes, I think it is illegal unfortunately. However, if you're in remote areas and aren't doing any damage, very few people, if any, will know you're doing it and they probably won't mind anyway.

Camping in Portugal is legal nowadays, but you can only stay for max 24h at the same place. Is forbidden to camp in any natural reserve and in private properties (unless the owner allows it), we must have to take in account that 93% of the Portuguese forest is private.

Thanks Sergey! I'm not usually in places where there are a lot of snakes, so I've never had to really worry about them. If there are mosquitoes around, I've got a head net that I'll wear when sleeping.

I've cycled Bilbao to Malaga and Barcelona to Vigo, usually stayed in rooms above bars, they are cheap & near beer..... I like to to tour in football years, the World Cup or the Euros, so that even in tiny places the bars are busy at night. This June it's Alicante to Cadiz.

really nice video with good information. I am 81 years of age and used to be a decent cyclist. Planning to rent eBike and see the Douro valley. Do you think I will get enough assist on the bike especially going up hills riding in the Douro? Or would I be wiser to cycle Andalucia where the grades are not as steep?
@IslandRides9 ай бұрын
Hi Stephen, sounds great! I think it would be possible to find a route in either that doesn’t require too much climbing. Looks like the N108 out of Porto follows the river for a while and so isn’t too steep (the first 45 km have 450 metres of climbing). I suppose the time of year could be a deciding factor as Andalucía is famously hot in summer!

I'm from Spain and I think I can add a few things: For number 2, although wild camping is illegal, you can put a vivac almost anywhere legally For number 3, bars and that sort of place will always give you tap water for your bottles for free, it's a law.

I’m not a cycling purist but I want to embark on my first set of touring rides this summer. I’m thinking of doing 60~70 km a day for a week. Is an e-bike a good idea?
@IslandRides10 ай бұрын
I've never used an e-bike, but I don't see why you couldn't use one for a tour. 60-70 km per day is usually quite a comfortable distance on a normal bike assuming the terrain and elevation are reasonable.

I’ve just come across your channel and thoroughly enjoying your videos. I’ve done a lot of backpacking around California and stayed in a hostel near the GGBridge at fisherman’s wharf some years back. If I remember correctly the fog horns are on Alcatraz island. Is that a Kona sutra? Just got one myself and love it. I was hoping to do the trans-America cross country route this May but have had to postpone due to illness in the family. I’m planning a shorter trip instead doing the length of the outer Hebrides and possibly returning on the Caledonia Way. Regards, Carl. Scotland.

Glad I found this video as i am planning to spend two weeks in Spain on my bike at the end of May and beginning of June (I actually have 18+days but 6 of these will be spent getting to and from Spain from the NW UK. I'm not young or super fit so was hoping to get to Santiago by train from Santander or Bilbao and then cycle back as the hills seem slightly kinder that way - do you have any thoughts on this or info re trains?
@IslandRides Жыл бұрын
Sounds great! Looks like it should be possible to get from either Santander or Bilbao to Santiago by train, though you'd probably need to change trains a few times and may need to keep your bike in a bag. I'm hoping to ride the Camino Frances later this year, starting in the south of France and following the pilgrim route to Santiago.

That cave was a lucky find. It looked awesome. It had to be man made. More hike than bike. Maybe you need a bike that can handle off road riding? A 29er with 3 inch tyres? I have to say I much prefer Gran Canaria not only is it more beautiful than Tenerife, stunning landscapes, it is better for cycling on or off road. Why carry such a big rucksack?
@IslandRides Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that cave was a great find! I bought my bike when I was doing more long-distance, road-based rides, but I would like to get something more suited to off-road routes as they interest me much more these days. My backpack just contains the bag I put my bike in during flights, so it’s quite light and saves me having to find cardboard boxes. I’ve only ever been to Gran Canaria for a beach holiday, but would love to ride there someday.
@alexmorgan3435 Жыл бұрын
1. You didn’t mention the psychopathic Portuguese drivers. 2. Did you actually ride the EV1? In Portugal it is very rough unrideable in places or thick sand or punishing cobbled roads. There are lots of better places to ride a bike.

There is so much great transit around Montserrat: a train right to the monastery from Barcelona, a cable car from the base of the hill to the monastery, several funiculars to get you around the mountain from the monastery. But cycling there is car hell any way you slice it, even if bikers do it anyway. It’s shameful, actually, how hard it is to ride from Barcelona to Montserrat without risking your neck on sketchy, busy roads with no shoulders.
@IslandRides Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a shame the route's not more bike friendly. A couple of times I've done the hike from the town to the monastery, which is probably my preferred way of getting there.

I've always felt safe, but it probably depends when you are. I've mostly ridden in the north and on the islands. Hi Jenda, with the regional trains you can normally just walk on with your bike quite easily. However, with the long-distance/high-speed trains, you would probably need to dismantle your bike (e.g., take the wheels off) and put it in a bag: www.renfe.com/es/en/viajar/informacion-util/luggage/bicicletas-y-patines
