What are you using to remove rust?
@LYLiang2 жыл бұрын
is there any way to avoid the part inside get rusted again? I have a similar pump and it rusted just few days after installation 😟
@J23Restorations2 жыл бұрын
I’d say to remove as much rust as possible from the inside because if you leave just a little bit of rust on the metal and paint over it, it will just rust all over again and bubble up the paint. Also if it’s just bare metal on the inside it’s just going to rust no matter what. So remove all the rust and paint it as well as you can so there is no exposed metal.

Thanks for the idea! Is it ok to paint the inner surface and plunger? I'm worrying the paint will get stripped when pumping water

Yeah doing this build was super fun, looking back there are a few things we would’ve done differently but we love the idea of klunker builds and we have created many of them prior to creating a KZbin channel. And thank you! It’d be so cool to see your build!

I've been gathering up my parts to build a clunker for some time now and now that I've got some down time while recouping from a pretty major surgery, looks like I'll finally get around to it. Been looking up other builds but some guys just go above and beyond. I'm wanting to keep it clean, simple and budget friendly.
@J23Restorations2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think some people definitely make something super cool but do put so much into their builds. We do something that’s budget friendly with hopes that it’s functional haha! We’d definitely love to see your Klunker when it’s finished!

@@J23Restorations I spent yesterday with white vinegar and steel wool to polish the rust off my rims. I'm doing a cheap Kent 26" single speed coaster. Got one rim all primered and first base coat. The 2nd isn't quite there yet. Tires will be here next week. I'm not too tech savvy but I will be trying to at least do a slide show of images and try to make a clip. If I'm able to, I'll post the link in comments.

What voltage and fluid is used for electrolysis? I was cooking off rust from some unplated really rusty sockets in muriatic acid, just before watching this vid. (I rinsed, dried and oiled them afterwards).
@J23Restorations2 жыл бұрын
So we use a car battery charger, which is passing 12 volts. And we don’t use trickle charge, we use high pass through. You can use acid but honestly we tested so many ways and the results always ended up being similar. We tried vinegar, baking soda together. We tried baking soda by itself. We tried salt with baking soda. We’ve tried acid as well. To be honest, it never made a difference from what we had seen. So now we just use baking soda and water. And sometimes we throw in simple green. I know it sounds crazy but it still works really good.
@J23Restorations2 жыл бұрын
The best results came more from what steel we used as the sacrificial piece plus how much area the sacrificial metal covered inside the electrolysis solution. So more coverage across your bin or tote or whatever you use works really well to hit the entire rusty object. I don’t know all the info about all the science but just that’s it works very very well. Check out the pliers video we uploaded shortly after this one, it will give you a better visual of what I’m saying (:

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, we are working harder to make even more dramatic changes and things. Side note, we do try to keep things original when it comes to the pitting and overall aesthetic. I understand it may not look 100% brand new, but getting it close is what we aim for. :)

Wow that's so neat to see something old and dirty and not working turn out to be a shining little treasure. I honestly thought that this was a little watering can for indoor spritzing plants 🪴. I guess you could use it for that too I suspose.

Just a tip, it would be nice to see it working after you completed the "restoration". Also may want to be careful what metal you use for the electrolysis if you're going that route for rust removal. The sacrificial piece you used looked to be a small zinc coated wire. A larger carbon steal piece would have worked much better.
@J23Restorations2 жыл бұрын
Yeah we decided to start doing that on the videos after this one. And for electrolysis we changed over to using a piece of large, flat, rectangle scrap steel and we bend it into a U shape and have gotten better results, overall works more effectively. Thank you for the informative feedback! I’m glad we stepped in that direction following this video (:

After so much heating to remove that screw I am afraid the metal parts in the area were affected and lost their hardness. Don't expect much endurance from the ratchet mechanism but some life is better than the rusted scrap it used to be.
