this video is almost as old as me. i never grew up listening to the mountain goats, but their music has become such a massive comfort for me in a really fucked up time of my life. i love hearing the pure emotion in darnielle's voice, it really conveys what this song makes me feel

It's easy to be bitter. This song somehow welcomes the feeling and normalizes it. Makes heartbreak, or just any hurt in general, feel like such a shared experience. Which I guess is an accurate point the song is trying to make. Us ugly humans; we've all got to live through our own No Children one way or another

I grew up listening to this exact recording. Moral Orel showed me this great band. I never knew that time would come. I did not feel like singing and boy did I look crazy I'm sure. I love The Mountain Goats. It's like this song was created for an exact experience I never thought I would go through. I will never go back to that town again. In my life.

I hope that our few remaining friends Give up on trying to save us I hope we come up with a fail-safe plot To piss off the dumb few that forgave us I hope the fences we mended Fall down beneath their own weight And I hope we hang on past the last exit I hope it's already too late And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here Someday burns down And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away And I never come back to this town again In my life, I hope I lie And tell everyone you were a good wife And I hope you die I hope we both die I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow I hope it bleeds all day long Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises We're pretty sure they're all wrong I hope it stays dark forever I hope the worst isn't over And I hope you blink before I do I hope I never get sober And I hope when you think of me years down the line You can't find one good thing to say And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out You'd stay the hell out of my way I am drowning There is no sign of land You are coming down with me Hand in unlovable hand And I hope you die I hope we both die

I saw the Mountain Goats last year. Just John solo. Best concert I’ve seen. And I’ve been to some big-time shows. This guy absolutely captures the room. His fans are so well versed in his work, that everybody sings every word and cheers for every song. And he’s funny as hell. Seriously, he stopped songs he’d started to tell a story about the song, or make a comment about something he thought was funny about the situation. Back and forth with the crowd, smooth as a comic with hecklers. Just one guy, a guitar, and a keyboard, and he put on the best concert I’ve ever attended.

I enjoy this song because I see it from the perspective of being in a one sided relationship, and it's okay to leave and not still love them. Its okay to accept that it was an unhealthy relationship. You don't always have to see the light at the end of every tunnel, and that's okay. Go to a new tunnel. Start fresh.

This has a weird dissonant feeling where the music is upbeat and happy but the lyrics are very negative. This song includes poppy instrumentals so you can tune out the meaning of the lyrics and pretend that it’s happy. Definitely one of my favorite songs of all time :)

This is the definitive version of this song. John can say he didn't write anything autobiographical before 2004 but he just seems so bitter and drunk and hurt here. I don't believe it, this came from him, from some very hurt place inside him.

if we are looking at the goats timeline, hed be singing this around the time of his stepfathers death and him writing "the sunset tree", its apparent in a lot of the shows from 2004 that hes going through it and its bleeding out in his songs but i truly think its most evident here. not with the marriage aspect of course, but the bitterness and the anger and the drunken sadness.
