it's an ultrasound machine for inspecting metals for defects like cracks or holes that aren't visible from the outside. the purpose of the wire is to tell the machine the position, that's it. without position the ultrasound can only look at a 2D slice (x axis and depth), so you have to take many of these images and hope that you don't skip over an area where a problem is, with the wire it can automatically take thousands of images as you move the ultrasonic head over the part and reconstruct a 3D image of the entire test area that you can look at later.
