The Ben Alder trail is one I definetely want to do although not sure about the uphill hike section just before cottage, maybe consider going back way the same route in, looks like an excellent ride none the less thanks for sharing Ian 😁🤙

No Unfortunately. it comes and goes very quickly. you have to be in the right place at the right time. Last winter was dreadful. however 2013 we were still boarding in June.

I really don't know why D Gully Buttress only gets one star as it's brilliant.. Here's a bit of video after we climbed Hell's Wall - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaO9daWnbdl7jMk - which is definitely Severe!

Thanks for fine video. Interesting route. My pal and I chickened out of leading Hell's Wall, as we found nowhere there for runners. So we scrambled up left and used the fixed sling above. We lowered each other down to top-rope that pitch. And I remember the exit pitch being exposed, on the ridge's right edge.
@largeformatlandscape
@largeformatlandscape 22 күн бұрын
@@tommybinson There were definitely few runners. I got four pieces in including one off the belay (and a very dodgy sling on a 5mm spikes to exit). And yeah, final exit pitch is quite thin for a scramble. Definitely Diff, thin and exposed. I've been told a left line on the last pitch might be steeper but more secure.

That route is affectionately known as the Bealach Bawbag route, its a dissapointing slog up to the Bealach and and quite a crappy descent to the Loch and a bogfest alongside it. Much better loop from the chapel at the estate house and and follow the shore of Loch Ericht to Ben Alder Cottage and up to the Bealach Dubh.

You pick some amazing routes. There can’t have been many that have trod before you. Whilst it didn’t look super technical it certainly looked as if it was greasy and in that sense way more of a challenge. What a little gem. Thanks for sharing.

Bloody hell, fair play to you both, the exposure on the crux was severe and that slip was scary AF. Takes composure and courage to immediately just crack on after that. I would have definitely taken you up on your offer of roping up.....as a mid level scrambler theres no way I would dare to attempt that without protection. Awesome weather you had as well! Great vid. (Cant help but feel if you titled it 'Close call on Ben Nevis' or some other such clickbaity title you'd get an extra 50k views)
@ianshaw6112
@ianshaw6112 9 ай бұрын
You might be right. Yeh Olivier is a pretty cool customer. He would never have slipped if he wasn't trying to rush. My advice to all is, stay cool never rush it. Also never go up anything you don't think you can get down from, if your not using ropes. We practice down climbing at our local wall all the time.

Always wondered what the crossing from the Bealach Dubh to Loch Ossian would be like... and now I know, you rode it so I don't have to, cheers! Do you reckon there's any value in riding this route in the opposite direction and taking the push as an uphill slog to get that nice descent on the other side?

well defineatly summit butress before trying dorsel fin. needs to be really dry, it had been dry for a while when we done this but it was still damp. Dorsel fin is a moderate, think this was a grade 2.

This video answered my fears! Didn't think it would be easy getting between paths over the pass and you confirmed it You can do a different loop if you head to Ben Alder cottage and climb back up Bealach Breabag but it's a rough climb. The decent from the lochan back towards Culra bothy is lovely though.
