This is so spot on and every point is 100% accurate and exactly how I feel and think as well. Been working in the private sector for nearly 15 years, many ups and downs and I have now started the journey to seek out work in the federal government. Just applied for my first role too and I am really hopeful of landing an interview after the application period closes.

The real problem is many feds do little and cannot be fired with just minimal effort! Motivations can be minimal and production nonexistent and employees can survive?

Looking at replying to a federal remote job, are those far and few between? do they ever call remote workers in?

If it were not for Biden, unemployment is much higher-why? He has an open door policy on two areas-the border(north and south) and HIRING INTO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. WE HAVE TOO MANY PEOPLE “working” for the feds. Sadly, once employed these people stay in the job forever, even when no necessary.

All the feds I know are happy. Me being a contractor they are not. Only good thing I see from private sector is my friend. He was a contract but they fired him for covid. They brought him back as a full time employee. Fast forward 3 years he's getting promoted to making 120k, but my friend is exceptional at his job he's not just a Joe Smoe. I don't want to do that anymore. Work my ass and gamble whether I will be treated and compensated accordingly cause I never have. 😊

I work for the Federal Government in IT/Tech! Most employees don't do shit, about 2/3rds in my person observation and research!! That's not acceptable!! No accountability!! Lack of discipline!! Lazy fat asses!! Lifers that are grumpy and pissed-off all the time or all days!! Incompetent managers and supervisors!! Stupid co-workers!! Layers of red tape to get shit done!! Those are the things I hate about working for the government!! Everything else is good!!

WG (Blue collar) pay is depending skill set and after that about politics, not how much time employed. Each grade has to be with a job application. Not Automatic. As implied by "Ask A FED" There are two retirement systems. 1. The original C.S.R.S. Civil Service Retirement System. That will be done away with after the last federal Employee on that system dies . (Congress is still part of C.S.R.S. so they wouldn't need another System) 2. The other retirement system is F.E.R.S. Federal Employees Retirement System. It was to get Employees to Use Social Security rather than Civil service Retirement because the Government could borrow Social Security funds. But couldn't touch Civil Service Retirement funds. (They kept that mum, dishonestly) Both systems are now eliminating the windfall part. No longer can you get social security, Military retirement and Civil service retirement (called double and triple dipping) There's a lot more to the retirement government systems than can be detailed Here. The F.E.R.S. system looked to be better choice because it was changed to retirement money market funds that were advantageous during its high return rate at the beginning but now is 1% less than C.S.R.S.

Worked in both private and public for past 35 years. For me, I preferred the private sector. More money, more rewards, greater variety.

This is off topic but what would you do if you know you're going to be murdered but law enforcement isn't listening. What would you do if you found out something that would send both local law enforcement and Judges are involved. I know my fate is sealed but who would you send the evidence to?

Been applying and it very discouraging. I’m a vet with 40 percent disability. I have a bachelor and master degree in supply chain/contracting with 13 years of experience. Been applying for GS 12 positions and above under my expertise and it’s been rough.

What level of clearance do you have?

I’m ETSing soon from the Army and in school for my nursing program, already have bachelors in accounting though just wanted to change career. But bn thinking thoroughly and have come to conclusion to work with the VA considering the effort u have to put in for a better future.

If it works for you then good. But it definitely is the opposite for me and many others I've worked with over 30+ years as a chemist and systems engineer. What I have to say may anger some people. Those who start out young in a job receiving a paycheck courtesy of the American taxpayer for many years can rarely if ever transfer over to to the private sector successfully. I've never received my paychecks at taxpayer's expense except once for a nightmarish 6 month stint for a state laboratory. They had no concept of urgency, staying busy doing something even if occasionally there wasn't much to do, weren't tough enough to work occasional overtime hours, lacked imagination, and above all they were WASTING tax payer's hard earned money. Therefore, there was zero accountability to/for the American taxpayers who were paying me/them to slug along each day. It pissed me off, I couldn't sleep well at night, was bored as hell, and I quit. I moved back to a lab job in the private sector, where I didn't have to experience all the dreadful stuff above not to mention pay and benefits . Peace.

At the age of 39, I will be retiring from the military after 22 years of service, only 4 of that is active duty. When I left active duty, I tried many things management consulting, real estate, insurance and human resources. I always felt like I was hustling and never really getting ahead and I did not like the work environments either very stressful, very high paced. If you want to get to that 100K Mark, it’s a whole other level of stress in the private sector. I just had an interview with the IRS and I might have an opportunity to join as a GS9 with a promotion to GS 11 after one year. Even though I am taking a large pay cut, I am excited to get back on the government track and I hope I enjoyed enough to do another 20 years!

One of the things I like about government service compared to private industry was work life balance. I get a ton of leave and don’t get grief for taking a vacation.

I’m a white male. I was a federal employee. I was abused by a female boss, multiple times. She can’t get fired and is protected. I filed a grievance and whistleblower claim. No consequences for her at all. I had to resign because I wanted a peace of mind.

It seems people have a different definition of the word "coasting". To me, it means doing no more than what you were hired to do. No one should be concerned about potentially getting fired due to them doing nothing more than the exact job they were hired to do. Going above and beyond does increase the possibility of getting promoted, but until that promotion comes (if it ever does, expecially in the government), you're providing more value than what you're getting paid for.

Cus the global private sector owns the government

talk about lazy, where i work 2 people in our department cant seem to go a full week of 40hrs of work without calling in late, calling off, or leaving early. even though i see them as lazy 1 was promoted to shift lead and the other was promoted from GS-9 to GS-11 to be equal with the rest of us, did they work harder after getting promoted? nope still playing the same games, I started applying to other positions to get to GS-12

I work in the Bureau of Prisons and heres my 2 cents. I just have to do 20 years and out with LEO retirement. I left the state DOC and in 6 years I am making double, almost 90,000 a year. The collateral opportunities like our version of SWAT or trainer are abundant. I personally teach a few different classes. Its cool overall. On the flip side...government shutdowns. Your paycheck is held hostage by congress. Sometimes the equipment is junk because of tight budgets. The IT department for my institution is only $15,000 a year. They constantly need to get money from other departments just to keep the network up. My supervisors are idiots. Half the time they got promoted because they they were deinking buddies with someone high up. If you want to advance you need knee pads or a strong liver. I'm fine where I'm at. I make enough to support my family and not sell out my dignity.
