Riveting and remarkable. Her dexterity is unbelievable. It’s all about personal taste. I find my ‘favourite’ depends on my mood. One day it’s Callas, the next Sill, or Sutherland, or Gruberova, or Dessay. The list goes on and on. Each one (and so many more) is a diva in her own right. Thank God we have them preserved for posterity, and for our personal, listening pleasure. 🥰

Sills didn't really have a Puccini voice, although she sang a few of his roles. Her greatest gifts were in other repertoire. She did admit that she became hysterical during this opera, and could never sing it again. And the conductor, Giuseppe Patane, told her years later that his father, Franco Patane, who conducted this performance, wept uncontrollably during Suor Angelica.

Sutherland had indeed fhe best voice! She was called "La Stupenda". She was also coached by her husband Richard Boninge. She had a full voice and her coloratura's were amazing. La Deutekom excelled in the queen of fhe night, but there are better Dutch recordings of her queen of the night than this one.

The one thing she never revealed to young singers was the technique she learned from Estelle Liebling. ‘I’m not a teacher’ is a little selfish, I think.
@munequitodeebano3920Ай бұрын
@@ransomcoates546 I don’t see it as being selfish I think there are singers that are good teaching and some that are not. When I was a student I had a master class with one of my idols/divas Anna Moffo and I was very disappointed with her as a teacher. She just wasn’t good at teaching techniques. But you see a Virginia Zeani and she was fantastic. One of the best at teaching.
@ransomcoates546Ай бұрын
@@munequitodeebano3920 Yikes! I don’t think I’d take any advice about singing from Moffo. I just think that Sills had some obligation yo pass on the teaching of Liebling, who was the last link to the great bel canto tradition of the 19th century. Perhaps she simply felt that the culture had changed to the point that no girl could begin as young as she did and spend essentially her whole youth doing nothing but perfecting the voice.

Lovely, truly lovely. Not quite equivalent to the Callas-Karajan recording, but a very, very commendable achievement. No complaints from me, except that it was terminated too abruptly. For f sake, allow it to finish decently before cutting it off!

No one compares to Sills...she owned the part. She brought all the Bel Canto training from Leibling that actually goes back to Manuel Garcia, father of Malibran and Viardot in direct line.
