Beautiful. Since this video quite a few organizations have published PDFs you can download to learn Michif..which I did. There are a few dialects if Michif...some are more influenced by French....others more Cree.

My mother and gramma spoke michif like this. Lots of cree. Some ppl on KZbin it's mostly french. Its bern 12, 13 years since I've heard this. Thank you for making it

I am learning michif, I speak french & I have a little experience in cree. This is what I got from the video: 0:55 peta means "bring it" so Norm is saying "Please pass me the pot" 1:14 newo means "four," I've also heard some dialects of michif use "quatre" 1:30 tante (tawnday/taande) means "where" & famii/famee/famille means family 1:57 I think I heard wistawaw which means "them too" 1:59 peyak = one 2:00 ma fii/ma fille = my girl or my daughter & then a bit later "et mon garcon/garsoon" = and my boy/my son 2:08 deux nosisimak (doo noshshimak) means two grandchildren. Norm said that he has two grandbabies! 2:14 it may be one word, it may be multiple, but I heard a "kista" in there which means "you too" 2:32 ma faam/ma femme = my woman / my wife 2:39 kikwe/kigway = what 2:40 tanshi/tansi = how so maube he was asking how they wanted to cut the carrots (bc carotte = carrot) 2:44 ekwa = and 2:49 le couteaux / li cooto = the knife (couteaux, cuteu, cutter, get it?)

When she says ihi it is like eha which means yes in cree. de loo = de/le eau(x) as in d'eau or l'eau *(see in reply) carotte = carrot ekwa = and I think I heard oignon which is onion merci/marsee = thank you tomate = tomato potate = potato I feel like most michif would use french numbers but I heard a peyak, which is one (1). le, la, li, & lii/les = the (french masculine), the (french feminine), the (michif), & the (michif/french plural) bon = good oui = yes mina = again or also viande = meat I heard kahki, kahki, barley soup & apparently kahki means "you can" but it can also mean "can you?"

I know this video is 15 years old but I am learning michif right now. I have adhd & I am hard of hearing so captions or a transcription would be nice if anyone can hear. I only understand a few words in there & some of them blended in with the words around them.

I am semi-fluent in french & I am learning Cree. I like to joke that I'm going to accidentally recreate Michif at home LOL

Since our people were and are still somewhat kin, the Québécois also wear it, I personally wear it like a bandolier too, its optimal for hot weather. I'd say for cold and a good coat, it's optimal too and even in combination with another (one for each shoulder), maybe a even another one for the waist like Bonhomme.

This is a fantastic video. I admit I didn’t even know about Métis Fiddle or culture. I live in Louisiana and I am very Milyer with Cajun fiddling. I just listened to several Montana mystery novels written by a Peter Bowen with the main character Gabriel, a Métis Who is a champion fiddler. It reminds me a lot of the Cajun Fais dodo dances. So cree language is gone like our ancestors, and what little remained was mixed with mostly french, and a tiny part English? So how can we call ourselves original people? When in fact all the original indigenous died off and couldn't leave their knowledge because the occupiers at the time destroyed everything we today would have known. Fucked up! I can type "fucked" without being auto corrected, but when I try to type free , sorry, "cree" I get corrected by the machine. I don't if I have to type Michif.

On a décrit le mitchif en tant que langue hybride, avec des racines cri (algonquines) et une grammaire française (C. Hagège, « Halte à la mort des langues », Ed. Odile Jacob, 2000). Pour ma part, je ne comprends que quelques mots çà et là. Je ne pense pas que le fait d'être hybride aide beaucoup à l'apprendre, si on part d'une base française, le mitchif a un vocabulaire assez différent du français européen, africain et même québécois.

Comme francophone, je reconnais pas mal de mots, mais je ne reconnais pas le sens des phrases. As a francophone, I recognize of lot of words but not the sense in which they are used.
