In active thermography, one must monitor the thermal response of the inspected body through time. A defective area will behave differently in time from a sound (no defect) area.

Is the image from the IR camera in grayscale?

The image is represented by one matrix of numerical values (like the case of grayscale images). In the case of IR cameras, the pixel value is related to the infrared radiation being emitted by the inspected body.
