Man it was a rough time for them. This was a software bug / slow performance issue of the flight computer where excessive delays caused pilot induced oscillations. -> That prompted them to upgrade to a more powerful PowerPC one where early processor revisions had a hardware bug that would cause the whole thing to freeze during certain maths operations. Same poor pilot had to endure both failures 😂 Guy is still alive, going strong at 80

Panavia Tornado in this video and Saab Viggen are the only fighters with something similar to thrust reverser made to operate from highways if necessary.

None of the explanations given in the comments are correct. The manufacturer of two metal pieces in the control lever had achieved such a fine surface smoothness that they became mating parts and fused together. This caused the control lever to become stiff to operate, resulting in the jerky flight and eventually the crash in 1989.
