I loved the jail scene in the remake, I think the subdued, monotone and cold Maria worked so well there. It made the moment all the more f’d up as you see her for the first time after seeing her die. I imagined how it would feel for someone playing SH2 for the first time, and how it really emphasises that there is something wrong with her, for a first time player it really works as a twist if they hadn’t realised it yet. And James’s facial animations in that scene are perfect. But the letter monologue is in my opinion much better in the original. The original game feels like a really good indie movie, and the remake feels like a really good hollywood movie. Both are amazing in their own right, but the original is still more impressive as a piece of art. The remake does specific things better, but some crucial things slightly worse. For the ”anyway” scene, I think the word anyway is delivered so much more better in the original, but the latter part right after that word is delivered better in the remake.

I disagree with you but I can see where you came from. Honestly to me Maria on the remake was “more real” to the situation the game presented. But yeah it comes to personal taste

True. I have seen a lot of comments liking the Remake version more. I might like the OG but I will not deny the remake is a good game.

@ I like both versions tho! OG SH2 is a masterpiece never needed a remake. But im very happy with the new version and It makes me hopeful for new sh games :)

I thought the 1st encounter with Maria was fine, but the “Anyway”’scene at the hospital was my moment of realization they might have toned down her character too much. The laberynth scene disappointed me a lot.

I agree with you on Maria so much, when I played Silent Hill 2 I was so freaked out by me not being able to tell if Maria could be Mary after her first death. In the remake she's more blatant and obvious, with a hint of creepiness always present, she's clearly mad at James, not letting that emotion resurface only at the ending. In the original when Maria first meets James she seems completely normal and flirty, without showing any intent, which also makes it creepy the more you know that Maria knew all along what she was, but it was more complicated than the remake. The fighting is indeed over the top. Also what I missed from the classic Silent Hill games is the soul crushing battle music, facing a monster with music on; was a damn nightmare, having to fight a monster shouldn't be a moment of glory or skill, but complete horror and disgust, and that would set apart Silent Hill from most survival horrors, fighting monsters would tire you mentally as well, and at some point monsters resurrect so often you're forced to avoid them, fighting is reckless and pointless in the end game, so it's more about surviving without wasting ammo for the boss. In the remake if you have 2 monsters close to you it's way too annoying and they stick to you like glue, and the battle music is a joke. The game dictates when you can stealth or avoid enemies, it's not optional like the staple that Silent Hill classic games were. I miss managing my light and radio for stealth and running for my life between corridors. In the remake you have to be Rambo killing everything in sight. It felt like Resident Evil 4. I disagree however on the voice actors, they're so much more experienced and I think this new Angela is way better, she's still traumatized and guilty, which should be the focus for the Silent Hill guests, which I think remake Angela does a better job at conveying that emotion, also the Abstract daddy fight was amazing, they dedicated a good love letter to the character of Angela in my opinion. Maria however was changed a lot, they're not subtle and they're not letting her character be secretive for the grand final, she actually got changed unfaithfully of her character sadly. I think maybe in some safe areas and puzzle rooms they could've added the old camera angles, that would've been a nice detail. I liked the remake a lot, but a lot of what made Silent Hill 2 was Maria and the usual combat & terrorizing music, which got hurt in this remake.

You don't have to take it seriously, but if you listen anyway what he's saying is true. People today have no taste. Hence why the zero care in most new games quality.

@@squall846 Not saying this game has no care, its just they flunked the most important cutscenes of the original. Gameplay is actually alright.

@@RoanokeSan I agree it doesn't have zero care. Silent Hill 2 remake at least *tried* to stay loyal and had some very good aspects, but the lack of care is surely there. Like you said they flunked the most important scenes. And for me it didn't capture the Silent Hill feel as much as the OG. A very good example of a Remake that had the same qualities of the original and more is RE the first Remake, and that was in 2002. Back in that time devs cared of the quality of their games more. You can feel their attachment to it and how they love it. Today, most games lack that, most not all.

The voice actors for Maria and Mary felt as you said... muted. While you use the jail cell scene, I pointed to the reading of the letter for the ending. Both examples work to show that the voice acting for those characters was a noticeable downgrade and lacked the emotional expression they required. That said, Eddie was a big improvement, Laura went from insufferable to tolerable, and Angela was a slight downgrade. James just feels... totally different. From good ol Midwestern Frog-Face James of the original, who speaks in a way that feels like he's trying but failing to understand and convey emotions.... to New James who looks like Leon and talks like Fox Mulder. New James doesn't sound like he's trying but failing... he just doesn't care for emotional anything. It's a different take, not the one I would have went with, but not bad either.

I thought Angela and James voice actors and characters were insanely well done. Playing some other random games after make me appreciate how deeply I got lost in the characters and stories in this game.

Yep. Angela and James are insanely good in the remake. I'm gonna be real, as much as I like the old version, it's not even close acting-wise. Just listen to them back to back, it's pretty obvious who is better. Maria though... She has her ups and downs both in the original and in the remake. I can go both ways with Maria. I feel like they went for two slightly different tones with Maria and both were good but there is a bit of a problem with Maria as a character. She is an enigma and I feel like she has to stay a bit undefined by design. A bit unreadable to some extent. A mystery. Even a lot of her dialogues are like that. Like what does she really mean? So it's really difficult to point, which version better represents her. She has to be too many things at once, if you know what I mean. Eddie and Laura - I like both versions, I think they are both good. So to me it's only Maria (and Mary) where I'm kinda not entirely sure, which version I prefer.
