Hi girl, I hear what you’re saying about “let’s stop hassling and pay extra for a moto.” As someone who’s lived in Asia, the Middle East and now Africa for the last 14 years, I have to disagree. Negotiation is a deeply-rooted cultural concept. Also, what happens if we keep overpaying, the local marketers/drivers etc.do keep asking for a bit more every single time. Which is fine when it comes to us - as you said, paying an extra 0.5 USD or a dollar/Euro (I’m not an American). But in certain places (I saw it Jinja, Kampala, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Nairobi) it leads to unreasonable rise in pricing and really trying to juice travelers out very fast. Due to high prices, travelers may start opting not to go (Zanzibar) because prices just become too ridiculous - say similar to European destinations. And lots of Europeans would not go/would not be able to offer to a destination that is this pricey. And would rather go to Croatia. Which in turn damages the traveler flow in the destination (take Zanzibar or else). And in long-term, the locals lose the opportunity to do their business, because tourists move to another more affordable destination. So, I’d generally always negotiate and pay what l manage to agree on with the driver. The driver would not go, if the price wasn’t good enough. We already support local economies, and some of us do not live on a US salary, or in USD currency. If you live here for a year, and you pay 0.5 or 1 dollar extra hundreds of times, or perhaps thousands - if we follow your logics not only with motorbikes, but also at the veggie/fruit market etc., we’ll definitely going to feel it. So again, it’s a long-existing cultural concept, and it seems to me that you’re speaking from a point of view of a traveler who comes and who’s gone in a week or two. In that case, I understand why you personally don’t care about negotiation and are happy to pay more. You’ll make the person’s day, but not change their life, and also give them the idea to ask every next foreigner they see for a higher price, and possibly distort the tourism economy in the mid-term. That’s my stance.

I live in Rwanda and I completely agree about tipping/paying a little bit extra. An extra dollar doesn't make any difference to us but it DOES make a difference to someone struggling to feed their family. Great to hear your comments! Let's be positive visitors to this lovely country with its really amazing people.

Are you preaching that we reward dishonesty due to some Rwandans being poor? Why should I be overcharged as a foreigner? I have visited Rwanda a few times, i love the people and the country. But what i hate is people trying to take advantage of me. I have helped lots of Rwandans and i am still helping even uptill yesterday. Charge me as per normal, and I will tip you for good service. Those who over charge me gets nothing but those who provide good service get x3 to x5 of what they ask for.
@adventurousmidliferАй бұрын
No not at all. Name one place in the world where prices are not higher for tourist. Right he in New York, tourist in the tourist areas will pay 3x the cost for everything. I’m not saying reward dishonesty but why do we expect anything different in developing nations but don’t blink an eye at ALL the ways you pay more because you are a tourist? 1. I preach doing your research and be informed what the price is. 2. Overt/disrespectful overcharging needs to be shut down. 3. If it is the difference between charging locals $1.00 and you quote $1.50 my thing is why argue over .50🤔 there is NO set regulated price (there are general estimates for Rwandans and tourist). 4. If they quote me $3.00 then I know they are trying to take advantage by charging me 3x the cost I am shutting it down. If there were set prices across the board than this discussion wouldn’t even be a convo. I clearly say its the Nickle and dimming for me. Hope this helps❤️

Peace yall. Im coming from america and going to Rwanda with a layover in Uganda and Amsterdam soon. Does anyone know if you MUST get the yellow fever shot? I checked the CDC website but its not 100% clear on an answer. Seems like you only need to get it if you're coming from a high risk area... Also, great video! i cant wait to be in Rwanda✨❤️🙏🏾

I wasn’t asked for it coming from Rwanda to Uganda by air (I didn’t have a valid one, it expired 10 yrs ago😮). I do recommend that you invest the $20 and get one in Uganda be cause is good for lifetime and in the U.S its $350🥴

I had stuff in Ziploc bags and it was fine. I think primarily disposable plastic bags like you get in the grocery stores are what they will confiscate.
