watching this makes me realize how little there is to a pickup after the wiring is taken off ! id like to repair a very similar 70s pickup but it makes me wonder if i should just buy another . It might make financial sense on some guitars but i suppose the new wire makes a sonic difference too . nevertheless its an interesting and honest video ,thanks .

I love the result you achieved. Although it’s a no fills stomp box, I want to build something similar

The BEST video i ever saw. Amazing. If you were in Portugal, wrigth now you 'll be working in some danelectro guitars issues and wining money. Your one of the BEST.

Love the vid. Im thinkin of changing a B5 Bigsby for a B3 Bigsby on a solid body Gretsch i have. Wondering if thats simple enough, and just to drill into guitar on the side to attach the hinged part ?

There are not extra windings around two of the polepieces. On the earliest pickups, they were "just a coil around a long magnet bar which left the 'off pole' areas a bit weak". By the time these pickups were made they had moved to using five magnets, with the fourth one being smaller. "The smaller magnet has opposite polarity and was added to boost the output of the top B & E strings." Quotes are from the Watkins Guitar World website. With the covers off, these are, to say the least, very odd looking pickups!

Mate, did the guitar fit back into the case ok after you installed the Bigsby?

Great video! I wonder how a B3 or B30 would stay still without having screws on the top to keep it attached to the guitar?!

My question is why not just buy a Gretsch with a Bigsby already installed they make them.

Hi, i have a 78 sg almost identical to this but with a rosewood bound neck, I am looking to do a refret but unsure of where to get the correct wire, any ideas .
Interesting video. I just bought a Gretsch G5622 Lefty in Georgia green. I was disappointed the orange righty has a Bigsby and not the lefty. I contacted Fender service and got they gave correct part number for the lefty Bigsby and the contact info for Vibramate . Vibramate does not make a left handed version. There is a Reverb seller asking 299 to 399 for this modded left handed Bigsby, but anyone can do it themselve for less. I am going to get a hold of a right hand V7 mounting plate and use it as a template to make a correct LH Vibramate clone and call it "leftys revenge"

Update: I received an email from Fender that told me should install the Bigsby B3 LH and the Towner down bar for the best option for a vibrato on my G5622 left handed guitar.

Hi! I have the same problem, please could you share the correct part number for the Bigsby for lefty? is Vibramate required to installa the Bigsby? thanks a lot

Dear Brenco, thanks so much for uploading this! I am trouble shooting, interestingly, a red lefty with the same date stamp! Exact same. Also, even weirder, it also has a too wide/stripped screw hole in the same spot under the tremolo plate! I was wondering if this guitar ended up having a working middle position with both pickups on. Mine looks wired the same but I don't see how it could have a 2 pup sound as is. Oh and the pots are odd, do you remember which ones were volume and tone? Thanks for any info you might have..

Great video. Nice workmanship. I've got the same Bigsby that I am going to fit on my 335. I'm trying to source a Towner Down Bar to fit in place of the tailpiece...hard to find in New Zealand, like a lot of guitar parts. Thanks for showing us how it's done. Sláinte.

Just a quick question. Could you not have removed the screw maybe drill it out to the next size if needed dowell it and then color it like you just did? I'm going to remove a bigsby of my Gretsch and go for the Traditional G Chrome Tailpiece... hoping It goes smooth Nice video too....watched the whole lot!!!

Just added a nickel Gretsch logo B6 Bigsby with a Reverend "Squishy" spring to my 6120 Eddie Cochran model. I hate the gold hardware that comes on that model so I switched everything over to nickel. And added a TV Jones T Armond bridge pickup, some locking Kluson Revolution G tuners and a Tru Arc bridge. Stays in tune even with a lot of whammy bar playing. The Tru -Arc bridge really added more sustain then the stock Gretsch Bigsby aluminum rocking bridge that never really worked all the great and sucked tone from the guitar. The intonation is spot on, too. They work great with Bigsbys. Luckily my Bigsby hole pattern was a direct match to the stock holes.

Awesome! Definitely putting one together. I’d seen in another (more unnecessarily complicated) video that a bass pickup had a deeper sound. Going to do this setup with the bass. Thanks man!

I just got one of these basses in an auction but I play guitar and gonna give bass a shot. But my question is whats a good set of pickups and pre amp to put in this bass? I'd prefer if I didn't have to use a battery either. Does anyone know if there's a mod for this?

As far as the inlays, many of the original Gibson lines have the Slant inlays ... Les Paul's, Birdland, Johnny Smith, L5, and others.. mostly Also relative with Ebaney, fretboards... DAngelico had Slant as others... very good 👁 eye, and not near the playability as the real model... keep up the good work..

Why didn't you use the 2 screws that were already on the Trem plate for the Hi Lo logo like it was originally ?
@mandoprince13 ай бұрын
This guitar would originally have had a different "Watkins" logo on the trem' plate, rather than the later "HiLo". If you look closely, you can see that the spacing of the holes does not quite line up with the screws.

Were those knobs the right ones for the posts on those pots? I’ve seen way too many pinched split post pots from a tension screw on a knob that wasn’t designed to fit it. Stewmac has a great video series on how to do stunning finishes with rattle cans. Check it out if you have a chance. Worth the watch.
