My Grandfather private 4850539 Sidney Wilfred Taylor was one of many men who took part in the Norwegian campaign. On the 23rd April 1941 he was reported missing. He was captured and incarcerated in many POW camps across Germany and Poland, including stalagg 344. He was repatriated sept/Oct 1944. He seemed to recover alittle, and got a job. With great sadness, he passed away 31st January 1945 at 5 Gallards hill. He was one of the lucky ones that got back home. I want to find out more of him & what POW camps he was in.😢😢 God bless each and everyone who died in the name of freedom. Thank you for your service

Interested to note that your tour ended in June 1965. That was the month I was born and shortly before my Dad started his own 12 month tour in Aden with the RAF at Khormksar. Fascinating to see your footage of Khormksar and other places he talked about, such as Crater and Steamer Point. Looking at the sun, the sea, the beaches and the scenery, I imagine Aden must have been a nice tour before the Emergency and what a shame it descended into the hell hole it became.

This was 1965 and the GPMG was used in the sustained fire role in the Radfan when it was first introduced. Our section gun group still used the LMG then. The cine camera was purchased on embarkation leave for Aden. My Army Book shows the I served in South Arabia February to August 1965 - there is no mistake.

Whilst I appreciate the ceremony and respect for Lt Col Bent, the Government advice was to place the memorial slab on view outside a place relevant to their life. Not hidden away in a Memorial Garden where very few will ever see it. 😠
@grahameustace1869
@grahameustace1869 Жыл бұрын
Well that would have been a civic decision. Bent hailed from Nova Scotia, Canada. His biography may be helpful: royalleicestershireregiment.org.uk/entity/72765-bent-philip-eric-vc-dso?q= The video is a record of the ceremony and is available online to reach a wide audience. Is it possible that more would see it outside of ‘place of relevance’ rather than a Memorial Garden in a town where he was schooled? Probably less people would see it were it to be placed outside of a place of learning - but that is a matter of conjecture.
@andypandy9013
@andypandy9013 Жыл бұрын
@@grahameustace1869 Yes, it was a civic decision, one by Ashby Town Council which I and many others strongly disagreed with. He went to Ashby Grammar School (now just Ashby School) which is a very well attended institution with entrances onto two main roads. These would have been suitable places to locate the slab, if not on the pavement in front of the War Memorial which is on Ashby's busy main street, Market Street.

Really enjoyed this often overlooked constituent of the British army. An army a professional one has many components, be that the infantry or artillery and then signals medical and veterinary who are magnificently shown in their modern and historical context here. Don't forget ladies and gentlemen watching horses, dogs and in some armies rats and pigeons have been used and cats more in the Royal navy to keep rodents away from food stuffs. Animals continue to play a big role in modern warfare bomb disposal dogs etc many killed and awarded gallantry medals like the "dickin" medal the Animals equivalent of a victoria Cross. The dogs particularly I loved were the English Springer spaniel used for sniffing mostly IED bombs and narcotics , but remember these are and all military animals not pampered pooches but authentic military personnel on the ministry of defence payroll and compared to some of my neighbours dogs who never get exercise regularly probably have a better life than owned civilian dogs and have access to very good quality veterinary services . We the British are a nation of animal lovers, and the British army excell in the care and provision of both it's service personnel and animals it has in its service. The British army excellent in all it does, God bless and preserve it and I salute the marvellous men and women of the Royal Army Veterinary corp's .

RIP. Respect to all the fallen. May God bless their souls. It would be appropriate for Britain to have a similar ceremony for 650 Cypriots serving in the British forces 1939-1945 and some untill 1951, who fell, in the people's struggle against fascism. Cypriots were in all the services. Army, Air force and navy.

The CVA is a private association and in all probability is affiliated to similar associations. The ceremony was therefore organised by the CVA and was not government funded or promoted. Remembrance Sunday is British Government organised and remembers all who served in the British Forces and gave their lives, including those from the Commonwealth and its territories. This inclusivity reaches local government levels and extends to those territories where those soldiers, sailors and airman were from. British forces fought in Greek territories to liberate them from tyranny in WWII and recognises the contribution made by the region towards this effort.including Malta and Cyprus.

@@grahameustace1869 Thank you for the prompt answer. Just one clarification. In the end of your note....British forces...i assume you rightly mean not only from the British Isles but from all over the Commonwealth, the Colonial forces ? I remember how my two relatives used to proudly say that they were member of the British Army. My uncle served in the Royal Navy from 1942-1946. My other uncle served in the Cyprus Regiment (which eventually became a division) from 1939-1947. He was in Egypt, Dunkirk, Scotland, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Eritrea (battle of Keren), Palestine, Lebanon, and in Italy, Monte Casino 1944. They both emigrated to the UK as soon as they were demobilised. Lived and worked there. They moved back to Cyprus, during their pension years. They passed away in 2017 and 2018 at the ages of 96, and 100, one month after his birthday, and receiving a gift-card from Queen Elizabeth. Is there any way you could kindly help and advice as to how we could find their military records, bearing in mind we only know their names, surnames, and serial numbers ?
