I absolutely love how close Marsali and Claire are. Marsali thinks of claire as her second "Ma." Claire thinks of Marsali as her 3rd daughter. Laoghaire would throw a fit if she knew 😂

They could have had him cut down on the battle field in front of John in one of the combat scenes just as a nod and have Hal drag John back to his feet to keep going. It could have still been part of Jamie’s flashback since he may have seen it recognized it as love lost as Claire was to him and held the memory. Then when we see Hal later and hear John’s retelling it would be explained to the viewers. I went back to the combat scenes trying to see the fate of murtagh, having that there would have been good too.
