Why does he use the backup device that needs to manually be pulled down when the other backup ASAP does it automatically. It seems like the ASAP would be easier. And he had it on his right hip?

He switched from ASAP to the manual back up device to pass the knot. He just never switched back to ASAP.

why not remove the casualties back up device once you have the casualty secured, - rope management keep it simple keep it clean less is more and don't have 4 sets of cow tails asking for trouble.

If its not in the way and works why would you want to remove a point of attachment? Redundancy seems like a safety rule. Less is more just seems like a freesolo

Hi, something I pick up with technicians a lot is they like to grab the rope when ascending and not the ascender. I noticed you did the same in the first move. Personal opinion, it is not good practice as you will get rope burn on the hands if there is a slip.

Descending with the chest ascender is a very strange technique to recommend. Why not just use your descender?

I much prefer the method that you used, ie attaching a duck (or second back up). This is what I've always done 'in the field'. However, when I did my level 1 we were taught to tie a second alpine loop in the back up line and then clip a cowstail into the new knot that you've just tied and then move your asap above the knot being passed. I don't really know why I was trained this way as like I said, I find it much quicker and easier to use a second back up in the same way that you did. I suppose it's a case of 'horses for courses'. 😂😂

I noticed that you had 4 cowstails. And also your short (or hard) link was made up from the middle of the cowstails. When I did my level 1 we only had 2 cowstails and we used a short link made up of either 3 carabineers, or a specialist short link. So, I just wondered why you had 4 cowstails instead of just 2 like I was originally trained with?

This is terrific for someone who has a handful of random climbing gear, like myself. A nice bit would be for someone who doesn't understand how these devices work, a bit of an explanation. Nice demonstration regardless. Thank you. 😊

It will depend on what company you work for and what they are willing to pay you for your qualification. Level 1 is fairly low but still a highly marketable skill, if you are currently with a company it would be worth negotiating your pay.

I think an ASAP looks like a better backup device than a duck, with more safety features, so why do the majority if not all RA technicians in similar videos have an ASAP as main backup and duck as secondary, why not two ASAP devices? It seems that ASAP would be a little heavier than duck, but for me safety would be more important than the extra few grams. Also when you do a maneuver like then, when you remove the primary backup from the old set of ropes, why not put it onto the new set above or below the duck and remove the duck? Sure it's an extra move, but again to me the ASAP looks to be the safest and more feature rich of the two devices.

I run 3 cowstails (a bull nose and a Progress Adjust). I'm interested in why you've got 4. Is that just for extra capacity? What do you use the 4th one for?

Tell me about cow's tails. I saw that you chose dynamic rope. Is there a standard rope diameter or a particular type of rope (static, dynamic, or rigging rope) requirement for cow's tails, or is it simply a matter of personal choice?
