In my opinion, you missed the main character of the typical motown bass sound. For that typical sound, you need flatwounds and, above all, dampen the strings with foam.

Yeah the 3 has way more pronounced upper mids and a slight scoop on the low mids. Kinda reminds me of a IIc+ which is awesome. Especially when the switch between mark 2 and 3 happens at 16:03

I really like this guy's vibe.

The B is definitely slightly more "defined" and treble-y, so it's like a more modern take on the vintage OM sound, whereas the Martin has more low end and is warmer in the top end, but like many Martins, the disadvantage to having more low end is that it tends to be less "tight" or "defined" sounding. To my ear, it's almost like the B has brand new strings and the Martin has strings that have been played on for a few hours. Both sound great, and I'd imagine the B will be better for flatpicking and the Martin would be better for fingerstyle. Tomato, tomahto, they're both outstanding.

Interested to know the serial number as I just picked up a different 1969 Mustang bass in the same colour today in fhe UK 🔥

Normally the Tele is my first choice with a Vox, however the Firebird edged it out with the tone dialed up. To my ear it was the clear winner. The Strat was very good as well.
