Nga mihi for the tour you should be proud! I’ve got the Hei tiki book on my bedside table ready to read too. Love the idea of putting a cloth in the bucket to capture the ‘dust/stone residue’ before being sucked up in the pump , I’ll keep that in mind when creating my space. Where do you purchase your cord from?

Hey, I get my cord from caudwell.co.nz. The thing in the bucket is actually a piece of foam mat that I am hoping will stop evaporation a bit, not sure if it catches much of the residue...

I love it Campbell. Merry Christmas to you & your family!
I see it as the inertia of the stone, try using a shorter bite on the cord, or stiffen the cord. Good luck. I have the same problem with a turntable that sets under my work. I suspect backlash in the gears.
@CampbellCarving13 күн бұрын
That’s an interesting way to think about it. I’ve never thought of it like that.
@darthvinci483114 күн бұрын
The conditions of where the nephrite lies has a major impact on the rate of oxidisation. Buried in river gravels or beach sand preserves fairly well (as well as the abrasive movement helping to keep them clean as you say). Sitting above ground exposed to air causes faster oxidisation. But the real killer is dirt, especially highly acidic or alkaline ground.
@CampbellCarving14 күн бұрын
@@darthvinci4831 so good to know that explains why some are more heavily oxidised than others!

Hey brother is the lashings and whippings of the cord is that traditional Māori style, because I’m thinking of making wood pendants and want to string them up like you do??

Is the rind another type of material? I sometimes find local agates and chert that have rinds that are softer than the silicate core inside
@CampbellCarving15 күн бұрын
That sounds similiar, it is weathered pounamu, can have different properties though if that is what you mean.
@timh684515 күн бұрын
Another great video. I’m learning a lot about jade & ponamu! Is there any uses for the slurry? Is is no doubt a fine dust & being silicon based is probably not healthy to breathe in. I was wondering if it could be mixed in a resin?
@CampbellCarving15 күн бұрын
It is not healthy to breathe in. It's not silicon, jade is tremolite based, i think and serpentine is something else.
@alpha952615 күн бұрын
Thank you. That was very informative. And asked questions I've had for a long time. But leads me to another one. will the pieces that are carved oxidize over time? Or will the oil from skin keep it from oxidizing?
@CampbellCarving15 күн бұрын
Good question. They will but over thousands of years. not sure what impact the oil from the skin would have, some older hei tiki have some signs of weathering I think, just colour shading changes.
@darthvinci483114 күн бұрын
The sanding/polishing process helps close up the 'pores' of stone (and wood), giving a tight 'skin' that makes it more difficult for oxygen to attack the structure, & body oils also impart a protective barrier - working and wearing pounamu is perhaps the kindest thing we can do for it in terms of preservation. But yes, carved jade will still degrade over time if left to the elements (tens, hundreds or thousands of years depending on conditions).

What you say about thick or hard pieces is true. I have good success with a set of 80 grit diamond burrs you can get from harbor freight tools. Spears and round burrs, but they do heat up, even with a steady flush of water and once to diamond is gone, you might as well try another bit or take a nap, as you wont be drilling holes. Thank you for sharing your craft! Have you done a video on the lashing process?
