I used to go there most weekends, but I'd have to say the best time was when the CKXL Radio Announcer "emcee" guy's Corvette got torched by one of the Jet Cars. Seems the Announcer wanted to show off his car by parking it below what used to be that old bus that was the Speaker Booth back then, which also happened to be in the path of the Jet Exhaust. I remember the crowd going wild as the side of the car just melted like wax. Unfortunately there were no cell phone (cameras) back then, so the chances of finding that on video would be slim if any.

Ha!....how sbout some 1/8 mile or longer real burnouts like jungle or the chi town hustler.....just modern era funny cars with long nostalia shaped bodies to fit the long non period correct chassis. Look at all the body mods on those camaro bodied cars. Not nostalgia nor period correct
@DragFiles4 ай бұрын
True, safety factor would probably be the main reasons for the current shape of the class. No way a period correct car would be allowed on a sanctioned strip in 2024. As for the streamlining, sounds like those concerns should be taken to the sanctioning bodies, (Pro Mod went through the same growing pains) thanks for checking out the video! (KN)
@halseyknox4 ай бұрын
@@DragFiles A mid 70's thru early 80's funny car could easily be up to current safety specs. My point is short wheelbase cars of that era with period correct bodies. And no computers! This is the guys with the deep pockets lobbing for rules changes to put speed and performance before period correctness....the same thing goes for nostalgia top fuel....and you can include fuel altereds I'm not the only one with this sentiment.....look at Brendan Murrays dragster and you tell me why his car is legal but looks the part and why his car and, less than a handful of others are the exception......
@DragFiles4 ай бұрын
@@halseyknox Well yeah, that's the argument right. if it's nostalgia keep it so. I'm just saying that any period correct car would have some sort of safety upgrading done to it if it were to make a full tilt pass down the track. Great points though. And yes, I agree that the aero stuff has to be curtailed going forward. Sorry if that wasn't clear above, lol. (KN)
@halseyknox4 ай бұрын
I'm not trying to give you a hard time but look up the ANA races at Bakersfield in the late 90's early 2000's and how the vibe then has changed into the transformer cars of today. A perfect example of the funny car comment is "The Tiki Warrior" and "Zues".....those cars look the part and look up the burnouts these two have done in the past! So much for current tire technology not allowing such burnouts. There is no reason that the Kacklefest cars can't be the "pallete" for what nostalgia top fuel should be. That's what the early hot rod reunions were all about including breather masks. Funny car guys were wearing them into the late 80's early 90's and nostalgia top fuel guys were wearing them including Jim Murphy until rule changes upt the ante with higher speeds and perfomance that got the nhra's attention to where they banned them.....sorry if I sound like sour grapes but if I wanted to see mid 5 second runs or quicker by computer cars with throttle stops I be watching and a fan of the modern era which I am definitely NOT

You've gotta love those old 3-part burnout sequences, with that little hop. Then they only go 260 miles per hour. If Funny Cars were running that same quarter mile today, they would probably reach 370 MPH. Or more.

When I was younger (when we all were), as a kid, I believe I first saw the Mooneyes car when I went to what was Lions Dragstrip just outside Long Beach off the 405 freeway. It may have been at Pomona. That was one thing that fascinated about the sport was the paint jobs. I would ride the bus from Torrence to downtown L.A., then to Pomona to see the Winternationals. It may have been there too. But I vividly remember The Snake, Big Daddy, and all those guys who raced there.
