It is odd to me that we no longer possess this kind of artistry and skill in the U.S. for the most part. There’s something to be said for doing things the old fashioned way as opposed to all of the mass manufacturing of everything we now have in the U.S. I’m in the midst of trying to buy “real” porch columns for an old 1800s home, and for what I am having to pay for them, I could employee someone for six months or more to build like they once were built here….one rounded brick at a time and then stuccoed over for the finished fluted and ionic designs. Instead I have to buy precast columns made from some sort of fiberglass cement combo. If I wanted to spend the money for the same columns in wood, I could use said money to employee two people for a year or more to build and hand carve them for me. There’s something to be said for the old way of building things and the artists that had the skills to do it all by hand and all without power tools.
