I used to go to Carr Lane stock car circuit in Nelson Lancs back in the early seventies. The star of the evening was always Stu Smith in Wildcat 391. He had some great battles with Doug Cronshaw, The Rochdale Rocket in 396. I once plucked up courage and asked Stu for his autograph on my copy of the evening's programme. Something I treasured for many years. Behind the wheel of Wildcat, he was an absolute genius. A great bloke, and a fantastic driver

I worked on the traction engine with him a few times and went over the Forth Road bridge on the trailer pulled by the engine. Stayed in the caravan to get up all night to keep the lanky boiler lit for his open day. He trusted me and that meant everything

Nice video. What is it with these crews that they let the locos blow off so much? On some lines letting the safety valves blow is a no-no as it's so noisy: you try to balance the boiler pressure against the fire and the water level to maintain good pressure but stay below the red line.
