1st 400 meter race I ran was at Hartnell college, it was a high school preseason meet with 4 schools and the bleachers were pretty packed. This was my first ever track event so I had no idea how fast I needed go out but when people had described running the 400 meters everyone said it was a 95% sprint you held on to for a lap. I was in lane 4 and went out pretty fast, by the end of the first corner I had made up the stagger on two runners on the outside by the end of the first straight away I had made up the stagger on the other two runners to the outside but had no idea where the runners to the inside were. When coming out of the second corner I was trying to glance to either side to see where I was and was elated to see I was in the lead by a good margin going into the straight. I dug deep and tried to poor it on but was already at max effort. At about 50 meters from the finish my hamstrings started to tighten and each stride became a struggle. I gritted my teeth and fought through the pain but 10 meters from the finish I went down hard. The track tore at my knee, shoulder and the left side of my face. I saw coach O'sullivan screaming for me to get up but some runners were already passing by me as I struggled to move. I saw the spectators out of the corner of my eye laugh in what seemed like one synchronous reaction. I was able to pick out of the crowd my friends pointing with uproarious joy and laughter then saw my girl friend with the most sincere look of concern I had ever seen. I scrambled to my knees and dog paddled my way across the finish line taking fourth place. I ran the 400 maters (and the 800) the rest of the season and I hated every one but never went down again. After the race my team mate Grant who had finished second and was a couple years older and a more experienced runner said, " I knew you went out too fast, I was just waiting for you to tie up." Up until that point I was just doing track for fun, something to do. I played football and basketball seriously, track was just a distraction and to spend time with my girl, but now I had a goal- beat Grant! I ran the 400 meters 11 more times that season and beat Grant every time.

What is the criteria for the invite? Seems like a lot of runners including some slow ones. We used to do section top 8 meets. I can't remember running an invite with this many runners in each event, of course this was close to 40 years ago. Hilarious music btw.

I go the middle school for Los gatos high school. I’m in 8th grade and our team (8th grade boys) won our league Im placed third on our team and 12 overall. I sadly won’t be running in hs because of marching band 😢
