I own the video, now I'm listening to the audio book at work. Always been a movie man and Robert Duval and Tommy Lee Jones own those roles. Still, the book has so much more character. Love them both.

I have read that Duvall was originially offered the role of McCall, but said no - he'd rather play Gus. Asked why, he answered that Gus was a role that, if played right, would always be remembered in depth and fondly. I think he termed it "a role of a lifetime". If you look back, it waas perfectly cast. Also, if you read the book there is no one better to paly Gus other than Duvall. And no one better than Tommy Lee to plan McCall.
