I never really trust "vegetarian" curry in Japan - it often contains chicken or beef broth. And "vegetarian" ramen often has bonito or fish sauce. Same with tamago roll.

wonderful video - thank you for making and sharing!! i'll be bookmarking for the day i get to travel there. so funny, a good bowl of ramen here in california costs minimum $20, so that $9 ippudo gourmet ramen sounds (and looks) delightful.

I'll be in Tokyo in 10 days. Can't wait! There are luckily many vegan restaurants in Tokyo. Happy Cow is an amazing location based app that has all of them listed. I used it all over the world and any vegan/vegetarian should have it.

What I found living with some Japanese students at college was that their idea of vegetarian always skipped over stocks, garnishes, seasonings etc. They would say that something was vegetarian, when actually they meant with vegetables instead of meat as the main part. But 9/10 times it would still have a bone broth base, or dried fish flakes etc.
@Wra8h
@Wra8h 15 күн бұрын
While I agree, what other options are there to trust? I can tell them no meat/fish broth but that's all I can do
@echo71515
@echo71515 15 күн бұрын
@@Wra8hunfortunately it’s just not that simple, as that is likely to sound like you’re asking for vegetables but without the broth. But the vegetables would have likely been cooked in that broth anyway. You’re essentially asking to sample someone’s culture but also changing that culture - it just doesn’t work out. Especially in Japan, such care is taken to make the recipe just right, and then maintain that consistency, trying to make off-menu dietary alterations down to individual ingredient is just not going to fly.
@Wra8h
@Wra8h 15 күн бұрын
@@echo71515 eh, I don't know about "sampling/changing the culture". Vegetable broth is also used in Japan, if less common. And swapping/leaving out one ingredient for some customers has 0 cultural impact 😂 I get what you mean though, that they cook it in one broth. You always have the right to ask just as they have the right to refuse. I'm sure it depends especially in touristy places or if they already have "vegetarian" options.

@@barinderthind Sorry for keeping you waiting, and thank you for asking! We've been trying to cover different areas in Tokyo, but if that helps, please go check our other videos as well! As for Ginza, I highly recommend a restaurant called "Japone". They serve Japanese-style noodles and spaghetti. It is usually packed with Salary-men, so I recommend avoiding 12:00-13:00 if possible(:
