Excellent. Question: From where do we take the courage and hope to still follow Kants principles in a world that has turned to Machiavelli?

I honestly cannot tell you how helpful this video was. I struggled to get through my university professor's lectures on this subject and still didn't understand it because of their teaching style. This was sooo helpful! THANK YOU!

Sometimes the graphics are a bit distracting and not particularly helpful, particularly the one at 0:33, which is supposed to illustrate "the world", but focuses on 2 continents that were still undiscovered during Aquinas' lifetime.

Animals are not so dumb. They certainly have a conscience and are not simple biological machinery. They have spirits too. Aquinas was not a zoologist 😊 we need to understand ideas in the conditions they arose from. I disagree that we have an instinct to preserve our species. Caring for offspring is a completely separate matter. I disagree that we have an instinct to preserve our species. Caring for offspring is a completely separate matter. I think Bastiat does a better job at describing the origins of natural law. We apply our faculties to resources to sustain ourselves. Thus, from a right to live arises a right to the land we work to sustain ourselves. Thus, law arises from property rights, to include our bodies, and then extends to a right to travel in order to trade. Law then becomes the collective use of force to apply the rights that any individual has, and not more than that.

IF YOU ARE IN MR MACABES CLASS HERE ARE THE ANSWERS: 1. What is God's relationship to the world after He created it? God has a very intimate relationship with the world even after he created it. 2. In what way do humans beings achieve 'success' in the world? We achieve success through our own actions and operations. 3. What does God give human beings to incline us to help do those things to bring about 'success?' The way that God helps us is by creating creatures with instincts or inclinations to form the actions that are good for them. 4. What is a 'sharing in God's Eternal Law?' The inclinations of created organisms toward the things that are good for them as a sharing in God's own eternal law. 5. What then is Natural Law? The human beings participation in God's eternal law. 6. What role does 'reason' play in participation in the Natural Law? Without reasoning, we would not know the best way to pursue the objects which are inclinations revealed to us as having value. 7. How is the Natural Law like light? "The light of natural reason whereby we discern what is good and what is evil." 8. What does following instinct and reason guided by the Natural Law lead to? Following instinct and reason illuminates the path to true flourishing or happiness. 9. What are precepts? Precept is another word for rule which is intended to regulate behavior. 10. What is St. Thomas Aquinas' first precept? "Do good and avoid evil." 11. What are the two natural instincts we share with other living things? Inclination to preserve our individual life and to preserve our species. 12. What are the two instincts that are unique to humans? Inclination to know truth and the inclination to live in society. 13. Through our instinct to preserve life, what are some examples of reasonable precepts that flow from that instinct? We can realize that life is good and valuable, and that we ought not harm or kill other human beings. 14. Through our instinct to know the truth, what are some examples of reasonable precepts that flow from that instinct? Do not lie and do not shun ignorance.

was kant an ethical relativist?
@montgomeryscott565710 ай бұрын
No, he was an absolutist. Relativists say everything is relative to the situation, there are no intrinsically right or wrong acts. And absolutists say morality is not about ends, but duty, law and obedience. Kant represents the latter.
