Admittedly, I was one of those Wink critics. I was so disappointed in him early that I personally nicknamed him "Stink Fart N' Smell." But he turned things around, and now I take back the critism.

Wink's a proven coach. The criticism he faced the first half of the season, repeatedly, was that "he blitzes too much." I watched every game and never saw that. You HAVE to mix in blitzes at any level of football to keep the QB uncomfortable. The Lions Vikings playoff game was a great example. Early in the 1st quarter, the Lions blitzed Jack Campbell and he nailed Darnold in the upper body. I said, "Let's see if that rattles Darnold." Sure enough, the rest of the game, he was off. D. Gardner has shared similar stories when he was QB at Michigan. He spoke of the Notre Dame game when he took a nasty hit early and was shaken up, as much as he didn't want to, he was affected by it. At the college level, you cannot let QB's feel comfortable. Wink got it together with the players on defense and did a great job. I was really surprised how well the secondary improved. J. Hill (#20) was playing quite poorly in the first half of the season; opposing teams were targeting him. By the last game against Alabama, he made that key play to knock the WR out of bounds and prevent a game winning touchdown drive.

A lot of people were down on Wink. I think that Wink needs a brand new bag to keep him here forever. 😅
