I think the Fat Man is the greatest summation of Fallout's whole ethos. Even among the mutations and biotech body horror, the idealistic factions, the perpetual 50's-era culture. A shoulder-mounted slingshot that fires a plutonium bomb barely out of a dangerous range for the user, with barely more yield than an RPG, just for the sake of it. The Fat Man is the greatest symptom of the ills that led to the Fallout world being a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
